This second volume of two-step dance music is drawn from 2001 releases and includes "Sunshine" and "Kinda Funky." After several years of smoking singles but a debut production LP that practically went up in smoke, it was high time for the Artful Dodger to take some lessons from the underground. And though Rewind 2001: Lessons From the Underground doesn't include many independent producers -- or obscure tracks, for that matter -- it's still an excellent mix, one of the few around capable of displaying the incredible energy and raw power of 2-step at its best. (Several others, in the Pure Garage series mixed by DJ EZ, appear on the same label.) At least half of the tracks had been making the rounds of garage compilations for well over a year, like the MJ Cole mix of "Game" by Bird, Sia's "Little Man," the Wookie mix of Gabrielle's "Sunshine," and Shola Ama's "Run to Me," but they're certainly no less solid for being popular. There are a bare few newies on tap as well, with Sugababes' "Soul Sound," Myron's "We Can Get Down," and Ed Case's "Who (Dub)" leading the way. 2002 wasn't shaping up to be another huge year for the British garage scene, but Rewind 2001 proves the Artful Dodger still has a finger on its pulse. ~ John Bush
