George Jones and Tammy Wynette are undoubtedly two of country music's greatest singers, and when the two married in 1969, a series of duets was hotly anticipated by fans. The two didn't disappoint; although their marriage was a well-publicized failure, their musical partnership was an unqualified success, producing three number one hits and ten top twenty singles. GREATEST HITS gathers ten of the duo's chart singles; the well-chosen lineup of songs omits none of their best numbers. Jones and Wynette particularly shine on the ballads, such as the classics "Golden Ring," "We're Gonna Hold On," and "Take Me." "Let's Build A World Together" features Wynette's best vocal performance on any of the Jones-Wynette duets, and it should go without saying that all the singing on this record is phenomenal. Jones and Wynette were produced by Billy Sherrill, whose taste for slick production is evident throughout; fans of rawer country might find that Sherrill's smooth style takes some getting used to. Some of the songs haven't aged well, either, but the chance to hear two singers this great working together overcomes any other shortcomings these records might have.
