1977's HIGH LONESOME is one of the Charlie Daniels Band's less well-known albums, coming as it does between the edgy bluegrass-rock hybrids of their early albums and the slick, genial country pop of their late-'70s commercial breakthrough. Most of the album consists of sentimental tunes about the South such as "Carolina," "Right Now Tennessee Blues," "Roll Mississippi," and "Tennessee," while "Billy the Kid" tackles Old West mythology in a style very similar to Willie Nelson's RED-HEADED STRANGER.
Elsewhere, the stomping "Running With the Crowd" and an excellent pair of ballads, "Slow Song" and the mournful title track, map out the album's emotional territory. Daniels' fiddle is less prominent than it is on most Charlie Daniels Band albums. This CD features an entirely different track order from the original LP.
