REO Speedwagon's third release, 1974's RIDIN' THE STORM OUT, saw the band still trying to overcome the temporary exit of original vocalist Kevin Cronin (who would return for good in time for their 1976 release, REO). With singer Mike Murphy replacing Cronin, the band soldiered on with one of their best '70s-era albums, and one of the hardest rocking of their entire career. A post-James Gang/pre-Eagles Joe Walsh lends some slide guitar work to the album (Marc Bolan's wife, Gloria Jones, supplies soulful backing vocals as well), while such straight-ahead rock tracks as the title track (REO's first true anthem), "Whiskey Night," and "Movin'" earn the Speedwagon points for guts and brazen glory.
