A portion of the proceeds from THE SOURCE HIP HOP MUSIC AWARDS 2001 will be donated to the Source Youth Foundation.
Another year, another slew of hip-hop hits to celebrate, and with entries the likes of Outkast's "Ms. Jackson," Ludacris's "Southern Hospitality," and Ja Rule's "Put It on Me" you can be assured that the class of 2001 contains the ingredients to be one of the best yet. Ludacris's cut, with its litany of Dirty South turn-ons, is a special treat, but Lil' Kim's "How Many Licks?" has it beat hands down in the sexual braggadocio sweepstakes.
Shyne's moody "Bonnie and Shyne" featuring old-school drum box rhythm and Barrington Levy quoting from his own dancehall reggae hit "Here I Come" is musically memorable and sexually explicit (yes, there's a definite thread to this collection). After all this sweaty wordplay, Wu Tang Clan's gansta rap "Gravel Pit," with its quote from Cameo's "Back and Forth," sounds positively old-fashioned, and oddly comforting.
