This is yet another reissue of Gary Usher's 1970 instrumental collection of Brian Wilson tunes. Precisely how one enjoys this album will depend upon how one feels about orchestras covering rock songs -- the upper strings carrying the tune on "Busy Doin' Nothin'," the middle strings doing the same on "You Still Believe in Me," the cellos handling the core of "Heroes and Villains," and a harpsichord and lots of percussion, as well as those ubiquitous violins carrying "Pet Sounds." The medley of "Fall Breaks Back to Winter"/"Good Vibrations"/"Heroes & Villains" has a slightly psychedelic veneer, and in a way, the whole project recalls the Jan Berry-produced Pop Symphony No. 1, but lacks that album's playful nature. ~ Bruce Eder|
