Sure, some of Cafe Noir's compilations can get a little redundant and are a little short on truly quality music, instead offering a stylish yet ultimately hollow theme in exchange. Consider the Acid Jazz volumes an exception to that generalization, though. First of all, there's tons of variety here, and that's what you want when it comes to acid jazz -- you want a diverse roster of vocalists and just as much diversity when it comes to the instruments and playing. You get that here. And when it comes to acid jazz, it also helps if you have different tempos and rhythmic approaches to help keep things interesting and avoid monotony. You get that here also. In sum, even if the featured artists don't strike you as masters of their style, they prove themselves more than capable, and help make this one of the better acid jazz compilations available in the early 2000s. ~ Jason Birchmeier
