It's a measure of Dean Roberts' considerable and broad appeal that AND THE BLACK MOTHS PLAY THE GRAND CINEMA quickly sold out its initial pressing of 1,000. Formerly a guitarist in Thela, a New Zealand-based improv-rock trio heavily favored by Sonic Youth, Roberts has since risen to the uppermost echelon of young improvisers. He's certainly among the most versatile of his peers, switching ably between tabletop and prepared guitars, percussion, piano, and computers.
After solo ventures as White Winged Moth and under his own name, GRAND CINEMA returns Roberts to the group format. Working with Tim Barnes, himself a resourceful improviser, Charles Curtis (cello), and Matt Valentine (bass), Roberts weaves the various threads of improv, rock, pop, and experimental composition that run through his eclectic catalog. A seamless suite in two parts, GRAND CINEMA incorporates a heart-melting Brian Eno cover ("Cindy Tells Me") and a glittering electro-acoustic array of processed and unalloyed instrumentation, vocals, glitches, and fractured-glass textures. Roberts dares to define his own creative parameters, transgressing genre lines with enthusiastic and surefooted abandon. GRAND CINEMA is defiantly progressive music in the very best sense of a much-maligned word.
