Paul McCartney made some of his best music when operating under the Wings banner. The collaborations with Denny Laine and Linda McCartney -- and later, Jimmy McCulloch and Denny Seiwell -- allowed him the chance to get other ideas and approaches into the mix and the result were tons of classic songs and a few albums that rate among his best, especially Band on the Run. The 2025 collection WINGS compiles selections from across the group’s run, roughly 1971 to 1981, doling out both massive hits and well-loved album tracks along with some of McCartney’s lesser-known favorites. Of course, Band on the Run is featured heavily and it would be hard to leave off huge hits like “Silly Love Songs” or "Let Him In,” but the set also makes room for some tracks that aren’t familiar to the casual fan and do a good job of showing how great a rock band Wings could be -- the ripping “Soiley” was taken from their live album Wings Over America, and (“I’ve Had Enough”) and the sweetly folky (“Deliver Your Children”) showcase their playful side. There are also nods to disco (“Arrow Through Me”) and soft rock (”She’s My Baby”) that show the width of McCartney and Wings range. And of course there are loads of intensely brilliant pop/rock songs, too many to mention. There have been other Wings collections and they were fine; this double-disc does the best job of capturing all aspects of the band’s career. Anyone wanting to study pop music of the era should make this one of their first stops. ~ Tim Sendra
