オーストラリア出身のシンガーソングライター、Harriette Pilbeamによるプロジェクト、Hatchieが、ニュー・アルバム『Liquorice』をSecretly Canadianよりリリースする。
プロデューサーのMelina Duterte(aka Jay Som)とのコラボレーションにより、Hatchieはより誠実で、奔放で、ありのままの自分を表現しきった作品を作り上げた。このアルバムは、若い女性の自己発見において、憧れと執着がいかに絡み合っているかを鮮やかに描いている。
「このアルバムは、このプロジェクトを始めた当初からずっとやりたかったことの集大成と言える。大好きなトラジックロマンスの映画(愛する関係が最終的に悲劇や悲しみ、不幸せな結末を迎えるロマンス)にインスパイアされ、愛の軌跡を細部まで丁寧に描き出した。これほどアルバムに共感したことはない。この体験を皆と共有するのが待ちきれない」とHatchieは語る。
『Liquorice』のジャケットには、笑い声をあげるHarriette Pilbeamのクローズアップされた写真が使われている。彼女の赤い口紅は滲み、キスの後の輝かしい余韻を彷彿とさせる。小さなデジタルカメラで、裏庭で即興的に撮影されたこの写真は、切望、欲望、そして後悔といったテーマを掲げ、荒削りながらも楽しく解き放たれたアルバムの真髄を捉えている。ロサンゼルスで長い時間を過ごした後、Pilbeamとバンドメイトであり長年のコラボレーターでもあるJoe Agiusはツアーを一時中断し、オーストラリアに戻ることを決意した。そこでPilbeamは自身の優先順位を見直し、友人や家族との関係にフォーカスした。
「最終的に、このアルバムのインスピレーションは、とてもシンプルな生活を送り、自分自身と再び繋がり、一人で考え事をする時間を持てたことから生まれた」と彼女は語る。『Liquorice』は、ありのままの自分に徐々に慣れ、もはや枠にとらわれようとしたり、自分を証明しようとプレッシャーを感じなくなった女性を映し出している。
Pilbeamは2022年から2023年にかけてブリスベンに滞在し、その後、メルボルンでAgiusと共同生活を送りながら、本格的に『Liquorice』の制作に着手した。これまでは、自身の音楽的影響を公言してきたPilbeamだが、今回は特定の音楽的影響を念頭に置かず、ゼロから曲作りに取り組んだ。慌ててアイデアを練るのではなく、何週間もかけて曲をじっくりと熟成させたのだ。初期の楽曲のメロディックなシンプルさに惹かれ、音楽的な不安も受け入れた。「自分の限界を、自分のスタイルを形作る強みだと捉えたかった」と彼女は語る。
Duterteの自宅スタジオで、Stella Mozgawa(Warpaint、Courtney Barnett)をドラムに迎えてレコーディングされた『Liquorice』は、Alex Farrar(Wednesday、MJ Lenderman)がミックス、Greg Obis(Dutch Interior、Slow Pulp、Wishy)がマスタリングを担当した。

When Hatchies Harriette Pilbeam released Liquorice, she was a married woman in her early thirties -- a time ripe for fondly revisiting the people and music that first captured her heart. On her third album, Hatchie turns away from the big, shiny ambition of Giving the World Away, where she worked with pop powerhouses like Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan collaborator Dan Nigro, for something more intimate. With the help of Jay Som and longtime partner Joe Agius, she scuffs up Liquorices production, blending her lighter-than-air vocals with crunchy drum machines and -- of course -- massive guitars into a sound thats as blurry as vintage dream pop or distant memories. Its a wise choice that ensures the sugar rush of "Stuck" is irresistible instead of overpowering and provides the perfect backdrop for Hatchies artful nostalgia. On "Carousel," she captures the swooning surrender of first love, her mood cresting ("everything I ever wanted") and crashing ("lost control of myself") over its gravity-defying strum. Her passion for the music that changed her life is just as strong on "Only One Laughing," a kissing cousin to Cocteau Twins silvery lilt that still bears her down-to-earth viewpoint (later, on the rippling "Lose It Again," she calls out a lovers "convoluted poetry"). However, the maturity Hatchie reveals on Liquorice is just as vital as its memories of innocence. The sensuality she brings to the title tracks bittersweet recollections make it a standout, and while songs such as "Wonder" embody her tried-and-true hybrid of mainstream and underground pop, shes not afraid to complicate the bliss she sings about, nor to play with the tension between hooky songwriting and sounds that float past those boundaries. She makes ambivalence sound as alluring as euphoria on "Sage," while "Someone Elses News" peeks into romantic intrigue with an unexpectedly tart melody. Whenever Liquorice threatens to fade into dream pop’s familiar haze, Hatchie throws a curve like “Part That Bleeds,” laying her confessions bare and keeping listeners waiting for a cathartic chorus until the last possible second. Filled with highs, lows, and surprises, Liquorice eloquently expresses young loves volatility -- and makes for Hatchies most consistent music since Keepsake. ~ Heather Phares

オーストラリア出身のハッチーことハリエット・ピルビームのサード・アルバム。ハッピー・マンデイズのようなマッドチェスター・サウンドを想起させる"Anemoia"、コクトー・ツインズに通じる幻想的な音像を描いた"Only One Laughing"など、80～90年代前半のUKロックの影響が随所で感じられる。作品全体を覆う甘美なサイケ感が心地良い。
