As one-half of the groundbreaking house duo Masters at Work with "Little" Louie Vega, Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez carved a niche for himself as one of the more prolific and reliable dance artists of the '90s. In 1995, Gonzalez created a studio project dubbed the Bucketheads, with whom he proceeded to score massive dance hits with "The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall Into My Mind)" and "Got Myself Together." As it often is in the dance world, the band's name was able to achieve ubiquity in the club world before any full-length album existed. With the release of ALL IN THE MIND, the Bucketheads proved they were more than simply a two-trick pony; they were capable of carrying their energy and ingenuity through an entire album.
The singles are still the strongest points on the album, particularly the rousing "The Bomb" with its pulsating, yet inviting sample of, of all things, Chicago's '70s hit "Old Days." However, tracks such as the insistent reggae-tinged "Sayin' Dope" and "Just Plain Funky," with its keep-on-truckin' groove and Redd Foxx sample, are compelling and inventive. The Bucketheads' music is more than just wallpaper for club-hoppers, but innovative music worth attention.
