初来日公演を即完させたバンド バー・イタリアによる2025年最新アルバム!!

ニーナ・クリスタンテ、ジェズミ・タリック・フェフミ、サム・フェントンの3人によるバンド、バー・イタリア。2024年に行われた初来日公演は即完するなど、ここ日本でも大きな支持を得るバンドがアルバム『Some Like It Hot』を〈Matador Records〉よりリリース。発表と共に公開された収録曲「Fundraiser」は、突き抜けるようなスピード感とフック満載のサウンドが交差する、バー・イタリア史上最もエキサイティングな楽曲。英国の俳優マット・キングを起用し、3rdアルバム『Tracey Denim』を想起させる描写も登場するミュージック・ビデオも公開されている。また今回のアーティスト写真も、エリザベス2世やデヴィッド・ボウイ、パルプを撮影した著名なフォトグラファー、ランキンが手がけた。
『Some Like It Hot』は、マリリン・モンロー、トニー・カーティス、ジャック・レモンが出演する1959年の映画で、自由奔放なミュージシャンたちの冒険を描いた作品。ユーモア、セクシーさ、騒々しさ、そして時代を超える普遍性を併せ持ち、三者三様のスターたちがフルスロットルで駆け抜ける傑作だ。そして『Some Like It Hot』は、ロンドンを拠点とする3人組バー・イタリアの新作アルバムのタイトルでもある。この2つの作品の間にある共通点は、偶然ではないのかもしれない。このアルバムには、ロマンス、謎、自己発見、欲望に酔いしれるような陶酔感が満ちている。情熱的なロック・ナンバー、魔法のようなフォーク・ポップ、酩酊感漂うバラード、そして午後5時の陽射しのようにふいに訪れる名状しがたい瞬間たち、そのすべてが脈打っている。本作は3人のシンガー・ソングライターが、それぞれのアンダーグラウンド・ルーツを超えてより大胆でシネマティックな新境地を拓いた結晶とも言える作品だ。

ディーン・ブラント主宰〈WORLD MUSIC〉より2枚のアルバムやインターネット上でシングルやEPなどをリリースし、その溢れんばかりのセンスからカルト的な人気を誇っていながらも、謎多き存在としてロンドン・アンダーグラウンドの震源地として活躍していたバー・イタリア。バンドの音楽性の深化は、初期の手描きスケッチのような自主制作音源(2023年には自作のドローイング展も開催)から、『Some Like It Hot』のような壮大なタッチへと発展してきた。2023年にバー・イタリアがアンダーグラウンドの支持を背に〈Matador Records〉から2作の絶賛されたアルバム『Tracey Denim』、『The Twits』を数か月差でリリースした当初、彼らはシャイで人と目を合わせることすら避けるようなバンドだった。暗闇の中で演奏を始め、終わるとすぐにステージ裏へ消えていった。しかしその後2年間で、イスタンブールから、即完した東京はWWW Xでの初来日公演まで、ニューヨークとロサンゼルスではソールドアウト公演を連発し、GlastonburyやCoachellaといった世界トップクラスのフェスにも出演。2023年から2024年にかけて160公演以上を行い、ミステリアスな印象を打ち壊し、何度もアンコールを重ねるほどの堂々たる5人編成のライヴ・バンドへと進化した。その知名度をイギリスだけではなく日本やアメリカにも広く伝播させている、まさに今最も注目するべきバンドと言っても過言ではない。バー・イタリアは、シリアスで誠実な主題に、ショーマンシップの歓びを掛け合わせる。彼らの楽曲は、個性を大きなコーラスにねじ込むことで高揚を生み、自己の在り方と感情とパフォーマンスの境界線を曖昧にしていく。アルバム名の元になった1959年のハリウッド映画は、こんな名台詞で幕を閉じる「誰だって完璧じゃないさ」。でも、このアルバムはそれに限りなく近い。

With each album, bar italias Nina Cristante, Jezmi Tarik Fehmi, and Sam Fenton make their refusal to be pinned down easily even clearer. The trio delivered tantalizingly serpentine noise-pop on Tracey Denim, then set an equally glowering and haunting mood with the deconstructed experiments of The Twits. Hints of both albums can be heard on Some Like It Hot, but bar italias fifth full-length owes more to their growing confidence. Months on the road honed their playing, and accordingly, Some Like It Hot is by far their cleanest-sounding album. While the smudged atmospheres of their previous albums added undeniable mystique, lo-fi sonics arent as integral to their music as might have been expected. In fact, clearing away the fog affords bar italia new possibilities. The band widens its dynamic range, building their voices and riffs to towering heights on the standouts "I Make My Own Dust" and "Rooster" and paring back to heartbroken whispers on "Plastered." Some Like It Hots bigger, brighter canvas also heightens the tension between the rawness and sophistication within bar italias music. By itself, "Eyepatch" packs an albums worth of ideas into three minutes and presents them with a tone that shifts from bratty to apathetic and back again. Cristante, Fehmi, and Fentons skill at juggling these moods in their collaborative songwriting and singing is still one of their greatest strengths, and on Some Like It Hot, they use it expertly. Each one is both star and support, whether theyre telling parallel stories on the bitter and brooding "Fundraiser" or playing off each other on "Marble Arch," where their voices slip from foreground to background like a camera shifting focus. This shared chemistry echoes the magic Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis made in the film that gave the album its title, but Some Like It Hot isnt exactly comedic. A more fitting reference might be Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes, which lends its name to a montage of drifting, dramatic melancholy with just a touch of irony. Here and on the velvety waltz "Bad Reputation," the band lets the deep heartache theyve alluded to in the past take the spotlight with striking results. As moody as the album gets, bar italia still leaves room for earworms like "Omni Shambles" and "Cowbella"s fizzing grunge-pop as well as the sheer beauty of "Lioness" psychedelic shoegaze. Equally poised and unpredictable, Some Like It Hots poetic, mischievous, raucous, and heartbroken songs come close to a definitive statement from a band in constant motion. ~ Heather Phares
