英国ポップ界のスーパースター=ロビー・ウィリアムス 約10年ぶりとなるニューアルバム『ブリットポップ』

英国ポップ界のスーパースター=ロビー・ウィリアムスの 約10年ぶりとなる新作アルバム『ブリットポップ』(原題:BRITPOP)。13枚目となるスタジオ・アルバムにはコールド・プレイのクリス・マーティンがギター/キーボードで参加した「Human (feat. Jesse & Joy)」や、ブラック・サバスのトニー・アイオミをギターに迎えたシングル「Rocket」、昨年発表されたFIFA公式アンセム「Desire (Official FIFA Anthem) (feat. Laura Pausini)」、最新シングルの「All My Life」など11曲が収録されている。同作のアートワークはロビーのアイコニックな姿のひとつともいえる＜ブリットポップ＞全盛期の1995年グランストンベリーでの赤いジャージ姿をモチーフにしたもので、ロビー本人は「ブリットポップ、そしてイギリスの音楽シーン全体の全盛期だった1995年、テイク・ザットを離れてからずっと書きたかったアルバムを作ったんだ。生々しくてギターもふんだんに使われている。16作目の1位は僕にとってすべてを意味している。ファンのみんな、ずっと僕とともにいてくれて本当に有難う。みんなのおかげで僕は夢を叶えることができました。」と語っている。

また、本作は1月23日付の全英アルバム・チャートで初登場1位を獲得。全英1位アルバム獲得数の歴代最多記録においてビートルズ(通算15作)を抜き、通算16作目の全英No.1達成となった。

The aptly titled 13th studio album from the English icon, BRITPOP surely has hints of the catchy pop/rock stylings of that titular eras heavy-hitters (see: Blur, Oasis), but it extends beyond the genre to incorporate stylings from all ends of British pop. Unmistakably Robbie Williams, every song has a festival-sized, anthemic singalong quality that centers on his irrepressible energy as a consummate showman and self-aware public figure. The set took shape as he was hard at work becoming an ape for his biopic Better Man, with an initial release date pushed back so as not to compete with a certain pop superstar on the British charts. It was a smart move, as Williams nabbed his 16th number one album. The honor is deserved, as this collection of songs is fun, polished, and without pretense. The rocking "Spies" and glam-leaning "Cocky" offer larger-than-life, Glastonbury Pyramid Stage-sized energy (the latter was co-written with Gaz Coombes of Supergrass), while the bouncy "Pretty Face" and elastic bass of "Bite Your Tongue" could have been Albarn numbers. Later, "All My Life" and "Human" with Jesse & Joy add some heart and vulnerability to the mix. Other guests include the Vienna Synchron Orchestra on the cheeky "Its OK Until the Drugs Stop Working," and Tony Iommi drops in to shred on the raucous "Rocket." The most heartwarming collaborator, however, appears toward the end of BRITPOP, when Take That bandmate Gary Barlow joins on the winking synth pop highlight "Morrissey." If youre a fan of Williams, there are no surprises here, just ten more great songs to add to a catalog that might one day get the credit its due for the pop stars contribution to, what else, Brit-pop. ~ Neil Z.
