White Lies seventh studio set, Night Light, is a brisk affair, nine tracks of their dance-friendly, post-punk revivalism that falls somewhere between the angular indie of Franz Ferdinand and the melodic pop/rock of bands like Portugal. The Man. Kicking off with the urgent "Nothing on Me," which sets the drums, synth lines, and guitar noodling on overdrive, Night Light keeps it relatively straightforward for most of the album, with the exception of a few surprise horn bursts. The raspy "Everything Is Ok" finds inspiration from Springsteen (via Arcade Fire), while the funky "Going Nowhere" is a standout highlight that channels Bowies turn-of-the-80s dance transformation. Although the groups early period still packs in the most memorable moments, Night Light is a fine addition to their reliable late-era catalog that keeps it engaging, impeccably produced, and emotionally earnest. ~ Neil Z.
