Watching The Sky - The Bangles Box Set (Clamshell Box)

ロサンゼルスでスザンナ・ホフスとヴィッキー・ピーターソン、デビー・ピーターソン姉妹によって結成されたザ・バングルズは、1960年代のロックとサイケデリック・ミュージックに大きく影響を受けたペイズリー・アンダーグラウンド・シーンからスタートしました。初期の作品は、ジャンキーなギターメロディーとパワーポップの感性を融合させたものでした。 1980年代には「ウォーク・ライク・アン・エジプシャン」、「マニック・マンデー」、「ヘイジー・シェイド・オブ・ウィンター」、そして数カ国でチャートのトップを飾る大ヒットとなり、彼らの代表曲の一つとなったバラード「エターナル・フレイム」など、ヒットシングルを連発したことで知られています。

Its hard to believe it took until 2025 for a Bangles box set to be released. There have been hits collections, single-disc reissues, and a 2014 collection of early tracks and demos, but Watching the Sky: The Bangles Box Set is the first time the bands first three albums have ever been housed under the same roof, here made special by the inclusion of quite a few additions. Alongside 1984s All Over the Place, 1986s Different Light, and 1988s Everything, there are B-sides, single versions, extended mixes, and the bands first single and EP as well. The stars of the show are the original albums, which certainly all have their high points. It could be even argued that All Over the Place is one of the great debut albums by any band. The mix of excellent band compositions and well-chosen covers, their sprightly playing, and note-perfect vocals make it still sound exceedingly fresh decades after it came out. The other two albums are worth revisiting, and having them placed in this context allows the listener to follow the changes the band went through in lightning-fast fashion. The extras range from incredible -- the early tracks that show how good the band were when left to their own garage rock devices -- to interesting (the extended version of "Manic Monday" or the dub mix of "Hazy Shade of Winter") to silly (the 14-minute-long "Bangles Hit Medley Mix.") For most, this set wont take the place of a well-curated playlist or a good greatest-hits, but for anyone wanting the full picture of the ups and downs behind the hits, this is a vital listening experience. ~ Tim Sendra
