2つのチェロ・ソナタ!

ヨハネス・ブラームス(1833-1897)の2つのチェロ・ソナタと、英国のロマン派チャールズ・ヴィリアーズ・スタンフォード(1852-1924)による《バラータ》を収録した1枚。

ブラームスの第1番は1865年に作曲され、母の死を間近にしたブラームスがバッハの音楽に慰めを求めながら書いた作品であり、その終楽章は《フーガの技法》の「コントラプンクトゥスXIII」と不思議なほど似ています。一方、第2番は1886年、スイスの風光明媚な地ホフシュテッテンでの休暇中に生まれた、午後の陽光に包まれたような開放的な楽曲です。併録の《バラータ》はスタンフォードが1918年に書いた作品で、もともとはチェロとオーケストラのための小協奏曲として構想されたもの。作曲者自身がチェロとピアノのための編曲版も残しています。

ソリスト、室内楽奏者、オーケストラの首席奏者として国際的に活躍するウェールズ出身のチェリスト、ステファン・モリスは、13歳でユーディ・メニューイン音楽学校に入学し、トーマス・キャロルに師事。17歳で「テキサコ・ヤング・ミュージシャン・オブ・ウェールズ」を受賞。2010年からはウィーン国立音楽大学にて名教師ハインリヒ・シフに学び、ウィーン室内管弦楽団の最年少客演首席奏者を務め、以後、ロンドン・フィル、ロイヤル・フィル、BBCウェールズ管などでも客演首席を歴任。2019年からはロイヤル・ノーザン・シンフォニアの首席奏者として活動しています。また、2019年6月にフランスのボルドー、9月にカナダのバンフと、トップクラスの国際弦楽四重奏コンクールで連続優勝を果たしたマルメン弦楽四重奏団のメンバーとしても活躍しています。

There is no shortage of recordings of the Brahms cello sonatas, which have a strong performance tradition behind them, with common solutions as to how they should sound. Listeners interested in the broad melodies and Brahmsian warmth of those solutions can choose from among the 2024 version by cellist Alisa Weilerstein, surely one of the major stars of the instrument by now, and pianist Inon Barnatan, or among the many classic recordings. Cellist Steffan Morris, better known as an orchestral player, is not a household name compared to players of many other versions available. However, this is a distinctive version of these two works, with several attractions that have been getting the attention of buyers and listeners on streaming services. One is the presence of Charles Villiers Stanfords Ballata, the first movement of the Ballata and Ballabile, Op. 160, a cello-and-orchestra work that Stanford arranged for cello and piano. The booklet for this release has nothing about Morris and accompanist Alasdair Beatson, or about how they happened to record this rather unusual work from late in Stanfords life. Yet, it works for the players purposes, which seem to emphasize their ability to treat the Brahms sonatas individually rather than as a pair, and it is a lovely work, folkish in a Schumann vein but with a dose of old-age introspection. It is common enough to hear that Brahms Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, Op. 38, reflects the composers downcast state of mind, but here the connection is made unusually clear as Morris and Beatson add expressivity with a bit of tempo flexibility and create a good deal of tension between the works dark melodies and its intricate emphasis on counterpoint. The Cello Sonata No. 2 in F major, Op. 99, by contrast, feels almost triumphant in this context. The overall course of the program shows the players bringing deeply distinctive qualities to each work, including the much lighter Stanford, which brings down the curtain in a calmer mood. One might have wished to hear both halves of Stanfords work; there was plenty of room on the album, but this is a Brahms cello sonata album that can stand up to the question of why another recording of these works was needed. ~ James Manheim
