〈On-U Sound〉を率いるUKダブの総帥エイドリアン・シャーウッドが、13年ぶりとなるソロアルバム『The Collapse Of Everything』をリリース!繊細かつ重層的なサウンドデザインと、ダブを基盤にジャンルの境界を越えて展開される冒険的な音響世界。マーク・スチュワートやキース・ルブランへの追悼の意も込められた本作は、シャーウッドの音楽人生と感情が凝縮された意欲作。ダグ・ウィンビッシュを中心に卓越したミュージシャン陣が集結。キース・ルブランの演奏やブライアン・イーノによる作曲を織り交ぜ、挑戦的かつドープなサウンドスケープを描き出す。
UKダブ界の名プロデューサー/ミキサーとして知られるエイドリアンだが、今回はミキシング・デスクの背後から前に出て、自身の冒険心に満ちたサウンドをこれまで以上に新たな領域へと押し広げている。そして、他アーティストのプロデュースと自身の作品との違いについて、次のように語っている。
「今まで何百枚も他人の作品を作ってきて、どれも誇りに思っている。でもソロ作品では、自分がすべての判断を下せるし、他の誰かを満足させる必要がない。今回のアルバムをライブでどう表現していくかも楽しみだし、多くの人が気に入ってくれると嬉しい。これは本当に良い作品だと思うんだ。」と。

The Collapse of Everything is Adrian Sherwoods first solo album in 13 years, though since the release of Survival & Resistance in 2012, hes recorded two albums with dubstep innovator Pinch, remixed a collaboration by Panda Bear and Sonic Boom, issued a live effort with Italian jazz crew Fire, and produced new works by Horace Andy, African Head Charge, Creation Rebel, and others. The albums title comes from a lyric by a recently departed friend, Mark Stewart, and it befits a release that seems like a commentary on the state of society, as well as a memorial for deceased colleagues. Another longtime collaborator, Keith LeBlanc (whose drumming is heard on two songs), passed away in 2024, and the EP built around final track "The Grand Designer" includes a posthumously issued Lee "Scratch" Perry vocal. Aside from a mournful tone to these songs, particularly the more forest-like ones such as the flute-heavy title track, theres also a war theme to the album, with sharp imitation gunfire punctuating songs like the vicious "Battles Without Honour and Humanity." The harmonica-laced "Spaghetti Best Western" brilliantly merges dub effects and Morricone-isms. "The Well Is Poisoned (Dub)," featuring Brian Eno, is filled with ascending guitar echoes, as its heavy rhythm trudges toward doom. "Dub Inspector" is no less trippy, with cascading soundwaves and synths that nearly sound like theyre singing with human voices. "The Great Rewilding" has more of a stilted, sideways rhythm, letting the airy basslines, haunting pianos, and rippling effects resonate, eventually flipping the script by flinging sounds in reverse. The Collapse of Everything is a powerful, sometimes harrowing work that lives up to Sherwoods lofty standards. ~ Paul Simpson

On-U作品に加え、スプーンやバンダ・ベア関連仕事など、相変わらず名前を見る機会は多いものの、ソロ・アルバムは13年ぶり。いつになくメロディアスで、特にエチオ・ジャズを想起させる哀感たっぷりの旋律が随所で際立っていることは、リー・ペリーやマーク・スチュワート、そして本作が最期の録音となったキース・ルブランの訃報も決して無関係じゃないはず。ブライアン・イーノら名手たちのサポートを得てバンド主体で音を組み立て、鋭利なノイズ加工は幾分控えめです。持ち前の越境感覚を披露しつつ、引き算の美学を追求するというダブの基本にも立ち返った素晴らしい一枚。

程よいペースでのリリースが続くと思ったら13年ぶり?『Dub No Frontiers』やプロデュース作品を間に挟んでいるからか何かと名前を見ることが多い彼だが、個人名義としては13年ぶりとのこと。極度にレゲエ色やダブ色をひけらかす感じが無くなって落ち着いた良質なアルバムのリリースがずっと続いているが、本作も良い意味で期待を裏切らない腰の据わった素晴らしいアルバムに仕上がっている。リー・ペリーの『Heav y Rain』でも共演したブライアン・イーノも参加。基本は生楽器の演奏に重心の重いミックスが冴える
