時代や地域を超えて多くの音楽リスナー、ミュージシャンから変わらぬ共感と尊敬を集めるシンガー・ソングライターの最高峰、ジョニ・ミッチェル。彼女の貴重なレア音源ばかりをコンパイルした"ジョニ・ミッチェル・アーカイヴ・シリーズ"や、RepriseやAsylumといったレーベルで発表したスタジオ・アルバムに最新リマスターを施した"アルバム・ボックス・シリーズ"など、数多のソングライターが愛し憧れたアーティストである彼女のキャリアを俯瞰する壮大なプロジェクトが展開されており、再び彼女の歌声やサウンドが世界中で再評価されている。2023年にはステージに復活した彼女のパフォーマンスの模様を収録したライヴ・アルバム『JONI MITCHELL AT NEWPORT』をリリース、グラミー賞で「最優秀フォーク・アルバム」部門を受賞、その絶大な人気と影響力で世界を魅了し続けている。

そんなジョニ・ミッチェルから、また新たなボックス・セットが届けられた。それが、彼女の50年以上にわたる音楽活動の中から、彼女の飽くなきジャズへの探究心を捉え、彼女自身によって厳選された61曲の楽曲をコンパイルした作品集、『JONI'S JAZZ』だ。様々なアーカイヴ・シリーズにもかかわってきた彼女が情熱を注ぎ、長い時間を費やしながら彼女の音楽に深く影響を与えるジャズという音楽への愛情を丁寧に編纂していったこの作品は、まさにジョニ・ミッチェルというアーティストとジャズとの対話を「音」で見事に表現しているのだ。

『JONI'S JAZZ』には、スタジオ・アルバムに収録した楽曲やライヴ音源、貴重なオルタネイト・テイクなど、様々な年代に様々なレーベルからリリースされてきた彼女の作品の中から、ジョニ・ミッチェル本人が厳選した全61曲が収録されており、その中にはした非常に貴重な未発表音源となる1980年のデモ音源も2曲収録されている。4枚組CDと8枚組アナログ盤という2形態でリリースされる今作には、今までのアーカイヴ・シリーズ同様、多数の貴重な未発表写真や各作品のオリジナル・アートワーク、そして新たな書き下ろしライナーノーツなどを掲載したブックレットも同梱されている。(1/2)

ウェイン・ショーターやジャコ・パストリアス、ハービー・ハンコックやチャールズ・ミンガスなど、ジョニのキャリアにおけるジャズの巨匠たちとの最も重要なコラボレーション作品が多数収録されているこのコレクションは、ジョニ・ミッチェルが「最も愛したコラボレイター」と呼び、惜しくも2023年にこの世を去ってしまったウェイン・ショーターに捧げる作品としても位置づけられている。ジョニは、「彼と演奏できたのは喜びでした。彼がいなくなってしまったのはとても寂しいですが、この音楽を通して、彼は私の中で生き続け、輝き続けてくれると思っています」と綴っている。

彼女のレコーディング・キャリアのほぼ全ての時代を網羅するこのコレクションには、『SONGS TO A SEAGULL』や『THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS』、『HEJIRA』や『MINGUS』、『TURBULENT INDIGO』や2001年グラミー賞受賞作品となった『BOTH SIDES NOW』といった作品からの数々の名曲が収録されている。また、ハービー・ハンコックが発表したグラミー賞受賞アルバム『RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS』にゲスト参加した楽曲なども収録されている。

幾重にも重なるリズムが特徴的な「Harry's House / Centerpiece」から、大胆な試みを見せる「The Jungle Line」、壮大な物語を綴る「Paprika Plains」、そして軽やかな浮遊感漂うインプロヴィゼーションが心地よく響く「Across In The Sky」などを収録したこの『JONI'S JAZZ』。1968年のデビュー・アルバム『SONG TO A SEAGULL』に収録されていた「Mercie」から、ジョニにとって20以上ぶりの本格的なコンサートとなり、世界中で大きな反響を呼ぶ力強いステージへの復帰となった2023年のニューポート・フォーク・フェスティヴァルでの彼女のパフォーマンスを捉えた「Summertime」の最新ライヴ音源まで、50年以上にわたる彼女のキャリア/レコーディングを網羅したこの作品は、コレクションを通して彼女の音楽的変遷の多岐にわたる軌跡、そして彼女の芸術的成長を辿ることができる、非常に素晴らしい作品集なのだ。

『JONI'S JAZZ』は、サウンドで描かれたセルフ・ポートレイトとして、決して偽ることなく、常に新たな試みに挑みながら創造し続け、生涯を通じてジャズと対話してきた一人のアーティストの姿を映し出す作品だ。2024年にリリースされた『JONI MITCHELL ARCHIVES - VOL. 4』の中で、彼女は「これまでの作品の中でどれがお気に入りかをよく訊かれるのだけど、それはきっと『JONI'S JAZZ』になるでしょうね」と冗談めかして語っていたのだが、ついにこの作品集が発表される今、彼女の言葉が現実のものとなるのだ。(2/2)

Since 2020, the Joni Mitchell Archives has provided fans, critics, and musicologists with four keenly focused volumes of the singer/songwriters compelling catalog alongside rare and unissued tracks. While Jonis Jazz continues the Archives series, it deviates from the format for the first time; its a themed collection focusing on hand-chosen selections from across her career. It reveals jazzs profound influence on her music, a genre she considers herself involved with from the beginning. Over four compact discs or eight LPs are 61 tracks that draw from nearly every important album in her career save for Clouds and Ladies of the Canyon. As a whole, this handsome package reflects the breadth and depth of the artists immersion into jazz in many forms. That includes "Marcie" from her debut, Song To A Seagull. That said, the inclusion of 2000s re-recorded "Both Sides Now" was arranged by jazz composer and bandleader Vince Mendoza. 1974s Court and Spark included the Crusaders Joe Sample and Wilton Felder, saxophonist Tom Scott, guitarist Larry Carlton, drummer John Guerin, and bassist Jim Hughart; it was a direct immersion in jazz-pop fusion. Her vaunted "jazz period" albums including The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Don Juans Reckless Daughter, Mingus, and the live Shadows and Light, all appeared in Archives fourth volume. The music here is drawn from those titles, but more, too, including material from Wild Things Run Fast, Dog Eat Dog, Chalk Mark in a Rain Storm, Night Ride Home, and Shine. The musicians appearing on these recordings include thew aforementioned as well as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Airto, Gerry Mulligan, Charles Mingus and Michel Colombier to name a few. The potential downside (for collectors and completists) will be the lack of unissued material and alternate takes. There are two unreleased 1980 demos -- "Moon at the Window" and "Be Cool" -- as well as deeper cuts from earlier box sets. Other notable inclusions are her fantastic vocal on Marvin Gayes "Trouble Man" from Kyle Eastwoods From There to Here in 1998, "The Man I Love" from Hancocks Gershwins World the same year, and an unissued live read of the standard "Summertime" from Porgy and Bess, recorded during the Joni Jam at 2022s Newport Folk Festival. There are a host of standards interpretations throughout the set. The sound of Jonis Jazz is warm, detailed, and full throughout. In addition to the music, the box contains a book-style notes and photos that recall the design of the one from the 2014 box set Love Has Many Faces. Both formats share a 2022 cover photo of Mitchell, Hancock, and Shorter, to whom this set is dedicated. Also included are a biographical/historical essay by Mitchell, notes by Hancock, Vince Ditrich, and songwriter David Wilcox, and a CBC interview with Shorter about his extensive live and studio work with her. Jonis Jazz functions as a kind of sublime playlist, providing a stellar grounding of her work in folk, rock, and pop, while almost constantly reflecting jazzs musical vocabulary and influence. ~ Thom Jurek
