12年ぶりの新作で堂々帰還!

アイスランドを代表するバンドmum(ムーム)が、Morr Musicより待望のニュー・アルバム『History of Silence』でついに帰還!2013年の『Smilewound』以来、12年ぶりとなる通算7枚目のフル・アルバム。2年の歳月をかけて録音・分解・再構築を繰り返し、丁寧に仕上げられた本作には、彼らならではの繊細で深みのある音作りが凝縮されています。電子音とアナログ音を緻密に重ね合わせた8曲は、静けさのなかに広がる豊かなサウンドスケープを描き出しています。

創設メンバーのグンナル・オルン・ティーネスとオルヴァル・ソーレヤルソン・スマウラソンの他、Mr. Sillaことシグルラウグ・ギースラドッティル(ヴォーカル)、サムリ・コスミネン(ドラム)、ロベルタ・アンデルセン(ギター)、そして、前作『Smilewound』で復帰したオリジナルメンバーのギーザ・ヴァルティスドッティル(チェロ/ヴォーカル)が現在のラインナップです。

mumが長年探求してきたテーマのひとつが「距離」。1990年代後半にレイキャビクで結成された彼らは、ツアーや個々の移住を通じて、常に移動しながら音楽を創ってきました。本作でも、季節や都市、空間をまたいで生まれた音が、繊細に織り重ねられています。そこには、軽やかさと親密さ、そして時間の重みが共存しています。

楽曲は、はっきりと進行するのではなく、ゆらめき、ちらつき、時に消えてしまうような感覚。電子音楽的なテクスチャーとアコースティックな響きが混ざり合い、声や旋律はふっと現れては消えていきます。「Our Love is Distorting」では、ノイズと静かなピアノが絡み合いながら、少しずつ楽曲の輪郭を描いていきます。一方、「Mild at Heart」は、静けさとともに自由に流れ、音の余白を生かした展開が印象的。アルバム全体が、まるで天候のように移ろいながら、リスナーの心に静かに触れてきます。

制作はイタリア南部のSudestudioから始まり、レイキャビク、ベルリン、アテネ、ヘルシンキ、ニューヨーク、プラハなど世界各地で録音が行われました。弦楽パートは、アイスランド北部のアークレイリにあるHofコンサートホールでSinfonia Nordによって演奏され、長年のコラボレーターであるインギ・ガルザル・エルレンドソンが編曲と指揮を担当。オーケストラは楽曲に自然と溶け込み、静けさを保ちながらも深みを与えています。

『History of Silence』というタイトルに反して、アルバムは色彩豊かで、そっと心に触れるような作品です。羽根のように漂い、思いがけない場所へと誘いながら、忘れていた感情や内面の声をそっと呼び起こしてくれる--そんな作品に仕上がっています。

The first inkling that Mum might be making their first new music in over a decade came when they toured to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their iconic debut album, Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is OK. In its own way, History of Silence taps into the mystique of the bands early days, but it doesnt feel like a time capsule. Instead, thanks to its remarkably expressive production and arrangement choices, the groups first album since 2013s Smilewound sounds like their music is coming back to life. Led by portentous bass and drums, "Miss You Dance" begins the album by gradually assembling its piano, strings, and rustling electronics into the kind of intimate yet monumental statement Mum were known for two decades prior. On cozy moments like "Mild at Heart," the nostalgia is doubled, harking back to the childlike wonder their music has always conjured, and to the musical era in the 2000s they helped define. Yet History of Silence is more concise and more spontaneous than much of the collectives previous music, filled with delicate songs that rise and fall like breath, then explode in gleeful sonic riots, as on "Kill the Light." Frequently, it feels like Mum cant wait to upend listeners expectations. On "Only Songbirds Have a Sweet Tooth," they submerge its sugary melody under a sea of echoes and let it wobble slightly out of tune. Perhaps as a reflection of their willingness to disappear for a dozen years, they use space generously throughout the album, surrounding songs with it and, in the case of the tiptoeing interlude "Avignon," injecting it in reflective pauses. History of Silence is often most interesting when Mum follow their adventurous muse to its limits, folding post-rock, hauntology, and psychedelia into their music effortlessly. "Our Love Is Distorting"s mix of lysergic lounge and symphonic pop is a standout, as is the shadowy surf-meets-kosmische of "A Dry Heart Needs No Winding." Other highlights, however, are radically simple: The things left unsaid between the frail vocals and guitar and swelling strings on "I Like to Shake" are just as powerful as whats heard. A confident, surprising return, History of Silence is one of the most moving and intriguing albums in Mums body of work. ~ Heather Phares
