ここ最近SNSやツアーで謎めいた"暗号"を投稿・提示してきていた彼ら。ファンの間で様々な憶測や分析が行われてきたが、5月末、それらがアルバムやシングルのタイトルを表すものであることが明らかにされた。そした6月にリリースされたアルバムからの1stシングル「The Contract」。ここ最近の彼らの作品に通じるミステリアスなミュージック・ビデオとともに公開されたこの楽曲は、壮大でダークな雰囲気を受け継ぎつつも、トゥエンティ・ワン・パイロッツらしいビートが生きている。続きがあることを示唆するミュージック・ビデオのエンディングがどこへ連なるのかもファンとしては見逃せないだろう。

先日前作『CLANCY』のワールド・ツアーが終了し、世界で11億人以上もの観客の前でその規格外のパフォーマンスを披露したトゥエンティ・ワン・パイロッツ。まさにキャリアハイを迎えた中での待望の新作リリースとなる。しかしながらトゥエンティ・ワン・パイロッツらしく全てがまだ秘密のヴェールに包まれている『BREACH』。明かされた情報はあまりにも僅か、そして世界各地のファンはその少ない情報の中から来るべき新たな音楽と物語を推測し始めている。そしてその期待値がMAXに到達した時『BREACH』の全貌が明かされるのだ。

Finally ending the sprawling saga that started on their 2015 mainstream breakout Blurryface, genre-blurring rock duo Twenty One Pilots bring their extended mythology to a close with Breach. Although signs pointed to 2024s Clancy as the final chapter in the story, the duo decided to add one final, conclusive volume and put it out just a year later. Sweeping and cathartic, Breach makes no mainstream claim to the contrary: this one is totally for the fans. After a decade spent picking apart theories, finding clues, and falling down rabbit holes, those "clikkies" are gifted with this final installment of the saga, which -- assuming theres no retcon on the horizon or a surprise reveal that there is, in fact, more to the story -- is finally where Clancy makes his last stand. For those diehard fans who have been consumed by the deep, subcultural lore, Breach will be a satisfying hit that adds fuel to the fire of fandom. Album-opener "City Walls" continues where "Paladin Strait" left off, a cinematic force that lyrically continues the story against the backdrop of an urgent, rapped verse/sung chorus epic. Just as the shiver-inducing voiceover from "Overcompensate" whipped fans into a frenzy with its simple "Welcome back to Trench," so too does "City Walls," as Tyler Joseph narrates the action with the call to arms, "Move it up, its a breach!" The pleading pop gem "Garbage" and the head-spinning chaos of the explosive "The Contract" (which sounds like it could have been an old-school Linkin Park track in the best way possible) are additional lore-packed standouts. For the casual listener who might not recognize Nico, Torchbearer, Dema, Trench, or the Banditos, Breach is still highly enjoyable because Joseph and Josh Dun are such great songwriters and musicians, able to twist and distort genre conventions to their own wills with satisfying results. The dubby "One Way" kicks stylistic rules to the curb and bleeds into the punk blast of "Days Lie Dormant," and the duo smash synth pop sheen, post-punk grooves, and a straightforward indie rock breakdown into the rousing "Robot Voices." Beyond the catchiness of these tunes, the heart of any TOP song -- and a big reason why they resonate with so many -- has always been the way Joseph mirrors his own very human, very real-world-based internal struggles and life changes with this extended metaphorical narrative. That depth and vulnerability are on full display here. Take "Downstairs," a Bjork-meets-Postal-Service highlight that features ethereal falsetto and glimmering programming: by all accounts, one could connect this to the overarching narrative, but its tender and loving enough to simply serve as a yearning love song. Whatever lies ahead for the Ohio duo, theyve crafted something truly special and satisfying with this saga. However, as their music has evolved more and more to just serve the story, maybe its best that Joseph and Dun are finally free to explore new avenues without the weight of such a hefty canonical burden. ~ Neil Z. 前作から1年4か月ぶりとなる通算8枚目のニュー・アルバムは、9分台の"City Walls"で幕を開ける。MV(必見!)とリンクした物語仕立ての曲展開が秀逸で、一気に引き込まれてしまった。ジャンルに捕らわれず、自身のクリエイティヴィティを爆発させる冒険心に改めて頭が下がる思いだ。さらに鍵盤と打ち込みを融合させた"The Contract"におけるエモーショナルなメロディーは素晴らしく、また、"Drum Show"や"Center Mass"ではバンド感を押し出したダンサブルなグルーヴで身体を揺さぶってくる。ほかにもフック抜群の曲満載で、作品トータルで隙のない完成度を誇示している。
