Ever since Cherry Red Records bought the contents of Joe Meeks legendary tea chest, theyve been releasing the contents in well-curated collections that focus both on the artists Meek produced and theme sets that gather up certain styles or sounds that Meek delved into during his short career. Most of the sets gather up a mix of previously issued songs and rare finds culled from their investigation of the mysterious tapes Meek left behind. 2025s three CD Joe Meek: A Curious Mind Outer Space! Horror! Death Discs! The Wild West! Demos! is comprised in much the same way and serves as something of a catch-all for some of interesting work he did as a sonic innovator. While most collectors will likely be drooling over the complete disc of alternate takes from his sci-fi concept album I Hear a New World, the other two discs provide a nice look at some of Meeks musical interests as they are broken up into songs about outer space, the wild west, horror, and death. The fragments, alternate takes, and FX free versions of the songs from I Hear a New World are undoubtedly fascinating, though the repetition of songs make it a tough sled at times. That being said, looking behind the curtain at the process that went into coming up with the amazing final product is just the kind of thing Meek freaks will treasure. The other discs are full of sonic treats as well. Alternate takes and different versions abound as Meek was prone to record songs over and over -- often messing with the speed and pitch -- in search of perfection, He also added all kinds of sound effects and other weirdness to songs and many of the versions here are stripped of those. There are also some sections of just sound effects so listeners can hear how Meek and his crew came up with the otherworldly sounds that adorned so much of Meeks work. Also included are a handful of demos sung by the man himself, though sung might be starching it as he was famous for his awful singing voice and tenuous grasp of timing and pitch. No matter, the musicians were able to take his scribbles and turn them into magic. Most of the sets to be constructed around Meeks hidden tapes have been winners, and A Curious Mind is no different. Its full of brilliantly goofy pop delivered by a crew of musicians and singers who truly believed in following the oddball path that Meeks mind forged. ~ Tim Sendra
