In a world of vague marketing text, it is a pleasure to come across some that accurately conveys the character of the material involved. This 2025 release describes Joel Pucketts compositions here as "each a very specific encounter between the composers vibrant creative imagination and the featured artists." Each of the three pieces here is a work for soloist and orchestra; There Was a Child Went Forth and the Trumpet Concerto are recent works and, although not claimed as such, are apparently world premieres. The Trumpet Concerto was written for jazz trumpeter Sean Jones and motivated by the fact that, although Aaron Copland responded to Benny Goodmans commission with a clarinet concerto, no other composer from the era produced something similar. It is an admirable study in how to embed jazz into a classical composition without being obvious about it. In There Was a Child Went Forth, Puckett announces an ambition to provide an "optimistic" counterpart of Samuel Barbers Knoxville: Summer of 1915, with both James Agees text to that work and the Walt Whitman excerpt from Leaves of Grass in Pucketts work embodying the growth of a young person. The final Short Stories was originally written for string quartet and concert band; the story of how it became an orchestral work is amusing enough to recommend the physical version of the album. It is termed a concerto grosso for string quartet and orchestra, with that venerable genre applied to lightly programmatic scenes in a three-section structure of eight movements. That work points to the nature of Pucketts music, which is in a neoclassic vein but applies that idiom imaginatively. He gets strong performances here from all the soloists; Nicholas Phans high tenor voice is well-suited to the part Puckett writes for him, and the four soloists in Short Stories are members of the London Symphony, producing expert results under the baton of veteran Joseph Young. Recommended to anyone interested in American contemporary music in traditional media. ~ James Manheim
