その繊細なタッチと美しい旋律で"ピアノの詩人"と賞賛されるピアニストで、30年以上ジャズ界の最前線で活躍するヴェテラン・ピアニスト、フレッド・ハーシュが昨年リリースになったソロ・アルバム、『サイレント、リスニング』につづき、ECMからの初トリオ作品。
深く研ぎ澄まされた三者間のコミュニケーション、洗練された、しかし控えめなセンスに裏打ちされた見事なインタープレイが聴きどころの本作でハーシュは、ドリュー・グレス(ベース)、ジョーイ・バロン(ドラム)と共に、スタンダードからあまり演奏されることのないジャズ曲まで、20世紀に作曲された曲の数々と3曲のオリジナルに取り組んでいる。
ドリューとジョーイはハーシュの長年の仲間で、それぞれ80年代初期と後期からフレッドのもとで演奏してきた。しかし、この作品はトリオとして初のスタジオ録音であり、数十年の経験によって形作られた彼らの卓越した集団的アプローチは、すべての曲で聴くことができる。

ハーシュ自身の作品は叙情的な激しさが印象的で、「Plainsong」では精巧なハーモニーと織り成す対位法が輝き、タイトル曲 「The Surrounding Green」では時代を超越したメロディの発明があり、「Anticipation」では抗いがたいブラジリアン・グルーヴがある。"Plainsong "のソロ演奏では、メロディの親密さがすでに紹介されていたが、ここで聴かれるトリオ編成は、ベースとドラムが新鮮なパルスを加え、ハーモニーの次元を広げることで、静かに啓示的なものとなっている。タイトル曲と 「Anticipation」はハーシュのソングブックに新たに加わった曲である。

Longtime friends and musical kindred spirits, pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer Joey Baron build on their deep history with 2025s The Surrounding Green. Billed as the Fred Hersch Trio, the three musicians represent a kind of bridge between the pianists original 1980s trio (of which Baron was a member, along with bassist Charlie Haden) and the group he launched in the 90s (with Gress). Both Baron and Gress were also members of guitarist John Abercrombies band and appeared on several of his ECM dates in the 2010s. The Surrounding Green is Herschs third ECM album, following his superb 2024 solo piano recording Silent, Listening and his 2022 duo collaboration with trumpeter Enrico Rava, The Song Is You. As with those albums, here the pianist offers a blend of originals and unexpected covers, along with refined readings of classic standards. The opening "Plainsong" is one of his most affecting compositions, bringing together his early Ahmad Jamal influence with a melancholy chamber classical sound. The title track is another standout piece, a sweet, sun-dappled ballad that sounds evocatively like Bill Evans interpreting a Roberta Flack song. Elsewhere, they dive unexpectedly into the off-kilter harmolodics of Ornette Colemans "Law Years" and offer a sparkling reading of Brazilian pianist Egberto Gismontis "Palhaco." While Hersch is the focus, he generously spotlights his bandmates, with Gress offering a supple bass intro to Charlie Hadens "First Song," while Baron adds his own hushed brush textures to Herschs "Anticipation." An album built on common ground, The Surrounding Green is a deeply intimate experience that benefits from the close camaraderie of Herschs trio. ~ Matt Collar
