通算18作目のソロ・アルバムとなる最新作『FIND EL DORADO』。これはただのカヴァー・アルバムというよりも、彼の感情と音楽的DNAを探る地図のような作品である。静かでメランコリックなレイ・デイヴィスの「Nobody's Fool」から「El Dorado」のひりひりするような痛みまで、ここに収録されているのは全て彼の内面を作り上げた音楽の数々だ。60年を超える人生のなかで、ウェラーは様々なジャンルの何千にも亘る楽曲を己の内に取り込んできた。そして彼が取りつかれたように聴きこんだレコードは自身のソングライティングを成長させる糧となっていったのだった。

ウェラーのブラック・バーン・スタジオとクンダリーニ・スタジオでレコーディングされた『FIND EL DORADO』。アルバムのアレンジとプロデュースを手掛けるのは、ウェラー作品ではすっかりお馴染みの存在となったオーシャン・カラー・シーンのスティーヴ・クラドック。彼はまたチャールズ・リーズと共にアルバムのエンジニアリングとミックスも担当している。アルバムからの第1弾シングルとなるのは「Lawdy Rolla」。このオリジナル・ヴァージョンはフランスの無名グループ、The Guerrillasによるもので、アフリカ音楽を世界に広めたカメルーンのジャズ・サックス奏者、マヌ・ディバンゴが参加していた1曲だ。
また同時にリリースされた「Pinball」は、おそらくアルバムの中で最も馴染み深い曲の1つであり、英国の俳優/ミュージシャンブライアン・プロザーローが1974年に発表した1973年のとある週末の出来事を描いた日記的な作品だ。ウェラーのヴァージョンでは、当時の空気を捉えたかのような侘しさを感じさせるヴォーカルと、前作『66』にも参加しているジャッコ・ピークの美しいサックスをフィーチャーしている。(1/2)

本作ではまた、60年代にイギリスとアイルランドから次々に登場したフォークやブルース・ミュージシャンたちに魅了されているウェラーの1面も垣間見ることが出来る。例えば、インクレディブル・ストリング・バンドの創設メンバーでもあるクライヴ・パーマーがスコットランドのフォーク・シンガー、ハマッシュ・イムラックの為に作った「Clive'sSong」。1971年発表のアルバム『OLD RARITY』に収録されていたこの曲は確かにあまり知られていない作品かも知れないが、フォークとブルース・ミュージック・マニアであるロバート・プラントはウェラーからのブラック・バーン・スタジオへの招待に応じ、結果彼と共にこの曲をレコーディングしたのだった。また今は亡きデリーのミュージシャン、イーモン・フリエルの「El Dorado」では、ノエル・ギャラガーのギターとキアラン・カーリンのアイリッシュ・フルートをフィーチャーしている。このラヴ・ソングのアレンジを手掛けるのは、ハンナ・ピールだ。この他にも、ニューヨークのロック・バンド、マウンテンがオリジナルの「One Last Cold Kiss」では、ウェラーはクリスティ・ムーアのヴァージョンを取り上げ、フォーク・シンガーソングライターのアメリア・コバーンと共にコラボレーションしている他、リッチー・ヘイヴンズの「Handouts In The Rain」では、アイルランドのシンガー・ソングライター、デクラン・オルークがウェラーと共にヴァースを交えている。

最新作『FIND EL DORADO』はポール・ウェラーにとって最も内省的な作品であり、彼を作り上げた音楽への貴重な洞察を聴くものへ提示してくれるアルバムだ。そしてこのアルバムを通し、彼は素晴らしい曲は決して古びることなく、ただ進化するのだということを我々に思い出させてくれるのだ。音楽の黄金卿――それはきっと誰の心にもあるのかも知れない。(2/2)

Paul Weller unearths both obscure and prized pop gems on his second official album of covers, 2025s Find El Dorado. Although recognized as one of Britains most singular performers, Weller has never shied away from celebrating his influences. From his early mod-punk years with the Jam to his Motown- and soul-influenced work with the Style Council, to his later ascension to classic rock royalty, Weller has mined the work of his idols for inspiration. He underscored this approach with 2004s Studio 150, taking on songs by Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin, Neil Young, and others. On Find El Dorado, he takes a similar approach, but one that feels even more personal and idiosyncratic. Theres a strong folk influence running through his choices, as on his opening take on Richie Havens "Handouts in the Rain," in which he trades choruses with Irish singer Declan ORourke. Similarly, he conjures a dewy medieval atmosphere duetting with Irish folk legend Christy Moore on Mountains "One Last Cold Kiss," and rounds out the album-bumping fits with fellow rock icon Robert Plant for a passionate reading of seminal Scottish folk singer Hamish Imlachs bluesy "Clives Song." Theres a quirky intimacy to many of his picks, like including 70s bubblegum pop harmony group White Plains "When You Are a King" or the Guerillas 1969 French soul-rocker "Lawdy Rolla." Of course, the more well-known songs are just as well-done and his warm take on "I Started a Joke" feels like it could kick off an albums worth of Bee Gees standards. All of these choices are just unexpected enough to keep you guessing what might come next and speak to both Wellers broad taste and deft curation. Its the kind of album that immediately gets you rushing to the internet to seek out the original artist. This is especially true on cuts like Willie Griffins wicked folk-soul anthem "Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire," Brian Protheroes Paul McCartney-esque "Pinball," and Lal & Mike Watersons AM pop gem "Never the Same." As if to underscore the bespoke nature of these choices, the album takes its title from a song by a rather obscure regional Londonderry singer/songwriter and BBC presenter Eamon Friel. Originally written for a 1983 film, "El Dorado" is just the kind of wistful song about the ephemerality of life and the passing of time that you can imagine Weller hearing on TV one day and that haunts him for decades to come. He sings, "Lets dance, romance, find El Dorado beyond the mountains of the moon/No fears, no, no tears, you pay the piper you call the tune." With Find El Dorado, Weller celebrates the passion for finding a good tune and the feeling of having discovered a lost treasure when you do. ~ Matt Collar
