ヘンデル: アレクサンダーの饗宴

【ヘンデル大成期への転機となった成功作を瑞々しく聴かせる新録音!】
ヘンデルが英語台本の劇音楽を重視するきっかけとなった成功作『アレクサンダーの饗宴』に、40年の歴史を誇るシュティリアルテ古楽祭で収録された最新録音が登場。経験豊かなイタリアの名手たちが中心を占めるゼフィーロがオーケストラ編成で臨み、同古楽祭の発足初期を支えたアーノンクールとの共演でも知られるアルノルト・シェーンベルク合唱団と3人のソリストと共に、ライヴの躍動感を宿しながらも手堅く緻密な解釈を聴かせます。『アレクサンダーの饗宴』を作曲・初演した1736年の時点で、ヘンデルは他のライヴァル歌劇作曲家たちに圧されながらオペラを書いていましたが、17世紀の大詩人ドライデンの作品に基づく英語台本を用いたこの作品が大成功したため、作曲の主軸をイタリア語オペラから英語のオラトリオへ移す気になったと言われています。初演時には3つの協奏曲と小カンタータを交え長い上演時間となった本作ですが、それら付属曲を省いた結果CD1枚に収まっているのは嬉しいところ。ソリスト3人のメリハリの利いた歌唱に6/6/4/4/2と充実した編成の弦が応え、木管に加えて時に金管・打楽器が迫力ある響きを打ち出す演奏は実に聴き応えあり、精鋭合唱陣も冒頭アリアの直後から感無量の終曲フーガに至るまでドラマティックな一体感を聴かせます。日本とイタリアで大きな活躍をみせる渡邊孝がチェンバロとオルガンで支える通奏低音も頼もしい存在感を発揮しています。

Here is a performance of Handels first great English oratorio, Alexanders Feast, HWV 75, with hardly an English person in sight. The performance was recorded live at the Styriarte Festival in Austria in 2024. Alexander the Greats triumphant feast, culminating in his burning the Persians city to the ground, gets a lot of splendor in this performance, which points in many ways toward the great oratorios of the 1740s. Indeed, the work is sometimes called an ode, after the original text by John Dryden, but it is really an oratorio. Listeners will be wondering about the all-foreign forces, and really, there is little to worry about; one can tell that they are not English singers, but they dont have an "accent" per se. The instrumental work is top-notch. Conductor Alfredo Bernardini leads the good-sized instrumental ensemble Zefiro and the Arnold Schoenberg Chor in high-energy counterpoint. Hear the chorus "Break his bands of sleep asunder," at the beginning of the second part; it is a wonderful breakthrough to the mature Handel style. Throughout, Bernardini gives excellent momentum to his choir and musicians, and the soloists, led by soprano Miriam Kutrowatz, are all very strong. The ornate harpsichord continuo (here "Timotheus, placd on high," from part I) gives an idea of the imposing quality that made this work a hit from the start in London.
