2007年シンガポール生まれの天才ヴァイオリニスト、クロエ・チュア(蔡珂宜)。『ヴィヴァルディ&ロカテッリ』、『バタフライ・ラヴァーズ&パガニーニ』に続くPENTATONEレーベル第3弾はモーツァルトのヴァイオリン協奏曲集、4枚組LPのリリースです。

2018年ユーディ・メニューイン国際コンクールのジュニア部門で優勝したクロエ。11歳での優勝は世界中で話題となり、彼女の演奏動画がSNSで拡散されたことで一躍有名になり、現在instagramのフォロワーは10万人越えの超人気アーティストです。2025年現在18歳のチュアはシンガポールの国民的人気を博す若手実力派ヴァイオリニストとして注目されています。

モーツァルトの録音プロジェクトはクロエがまだ15歳だったころに開始。このレパートリーを録音した数多くの名ヴァイオリニストの足跡を辿りたいというクロエの強い意志によって実現しました。モーツァルトがクロエと同じ年頃に書かれたこれらの作品。クロエの洗練された新鮮な解釈は15,16歳の演奏とは思えぬほどの完成度です。

ヴァイオリンとヴィオラのための協奏交響曲では2016年、ユーディ・メニューイン国際コンクールで弱冠16歳で優勝した中国の若手ヴィオリスト、ズーユー・フー(何子毓)と共演。同コンクールの優勝者であるクロエとともにその卓越した芸術性を披露しています。

同時リリースの3枚組CD盤(PTC-5187420)とはジャケットが異なり、コレクターズ・アイテムとしても注目です。

Chloe Chua is a major star in Southeast Asia and, just 18 years old when this album appeared in 2025, is already a recording veteran, with three albums under her belt on the major Pentatone label. It seems astonishing that these Mozart concerto recordings were made in Singapore in 2022 and 2023, when she was in her mid-teens. This album, containing not only Mozarts five violin concertos but also the Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major, K. 364, and several single-movements for violin and orchestra, is her best yet. On earlier releases, Chua has delivered more or less obligatory items with Vivaldis Four Seasons and the Butterfly Lovers Concerto from China, but here, she enters a crowded field with Mozarts concertos and achieves quite distinctive results. Sample the opening movement of the Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219. She has the technical confidence of a prodigy, but she deploys it in the service of flowing grace rather than flashiness. Her passagework has precision and perfection, but it avoids the whiff of the conservatory; she is in control of the phrasing, and she brings a touch of humor to Mozart, who, she points out, was a fellow teenager when she wrote these works. She and viola soloist Ziyu He bring contrasting styles to the Sinfonia Concertante; he has a warmer sound, and there is a sense of dialogue. Conductor Hans Graf, leading the Singapore Symphony, deserves credit for keeping the orchestra tamped down so as not to put pressure on Chuas delicate playing. One awaits the work of this youngster in the big Romantic concertos, for which she is definitely ready, and readers might seek out a live Chua concert if she comes their way. This album stands out among recent conventional-instrument recordings of the Mozart concertos, and it made classical best-seller lists in the summer of 2025. ~ James Manheim
