スコットランド生まれのピアニスト、スティーヴン・オズボーンによるシューベルト作品のニュー・アルバムが「ハイペリオン」レーベルから発売されます。オズボーンのこのレーベルへの録音は25年を超え、すでに35枚のアルバムをリリースしました。グラモフォン賞を2回、ドイツ・レコード批評家賞を3回受賞、国内外のメディアの年間最優秀賞にも選ばれています。このアルバムではシューベルトの思慮深く成熟した作品、短いながら多作だった彼の生涯の最後の年に作曲された、ピアノ作品の中でも最も壮大なイ長調のピアノ・ソナタD959、そして人気の高い『楽興の時』が収録されています。

Pianist Steven Osborne has made several albums of Schuberts music, and they have been well-received despite covering ground explored by many other pianists. He does it again with this release, which made classical best-seller lists in the summer of 2025. He has mostly recorded short Schubert pieces, but here, the opening and high point of the program is the Piano Sonata in A major, D. 959. Pianists have brought gentle lyricism to this work, and they have brought explosive, tragic drama, especially in the center of the slow movement. One could say that Osborne steers a middle path, but that doesnt quite capture it. He rethinks the work in Beethovenian terms, with booklet notes in the recommended physical version that stress the importance of Beethovens funeral in Schuberts late works; Schubert attended with Hummel, and it occasioned profound musical thinking that has little to do with whether there is a "farewell" atmosphere in the late Schubert piano sonatas. There are various marks of Beethovens influence in the last three sonatas, but instead of searching for individual tunes, simply consider the big chordal sound of the sonatas first movement. Taken quickly as it is here, the music sounds very much like Beethoven. Osborne is slower than usual, however, in the Andantino movement, and here he strikes an ideal balance between somewhat enervated melancholy in the main material and big tragedy in the middle; everything is under control and doesnt come off sounding like Tchaikovsky. There are many other beautiful points in the performance, in the final two movements of the sonata and in the impressively detailed Moments Musicaux, D. 780, but the first two sonata movements are for the ages. One breathlessly awaits the other two late Schubert sonatas from this impressive artist. ~ James Manheim
