キース・ジャレットの80歳の誕生日を記念し、ウィーンで2016年7月に行われたソロ・ライヴ録音の新作がリリース!

ソロ・ピアノでのライヴ演奏の可能性、概念をも大きく変え、『ケルン・コンサート』をはじめとする数々の名盤を世に送り続ける孤高のピアニスト、キース・ジャレットが5月8日に80歳の誕生日を迎えたことを記念し、最後のヨーロッパ・ソロ・ツアーからのライヴ・アルバムが急遽リリース。

本作は、キース・ジャレットの最後のヨーロッパ・ソロ・ツアーからリリースされる4枚目のライヴ録音作品で『ミュンヘン2016』、『ブダペスト・コンサート』、『ボルドー・コンサート』に続くもの。すでに伝説的な『ウィーン・コンサート』(ウィーン国立歌劇場で1991年に録音)というライヴ作品があり、本人はかつてその作品を「長年の"炎の求愛"の末に"炎そのものの言葉"を語った」と主張していたというが、本作では2016年にウィーンに再び訪れ、インスピレーションの炎は、活気に満ちた音響特性を持つもうひとつの歴史的な場所、ウィーン楽友協会黄金の間にもたらされたものとなっている。

本作は、その瞬間に新しい音楽を形成しており、その範囲はほぼ百科事典的である。『ブレーメン/ローザンヌ』、『ケルン・コンサート』から『ウィーン・コンサート』に至るまで、ジャレットの初期のソロ・コンサートを代表する長大な形式は、彼の演奏人生の最終段階に入ったこの時期には、短い、自己完結的で対照的な曲で構成されるショーに取って代わられた。そして、2016年7月9日のウィーン楽友協会での公演がそうだった。 「パート 1」は、自然発生的な音の渦であり、渦を巻き、濃密で複雑である。「パート 2」は静寂の中で和音が浮かび上がり、ゆったりとした旋律が引き出される。 リズムが前面に押し出された「パート3」では、ジャレットがそれぞれの手で別々のパターンを展開し、それを織り交ぜる能力が際立っている。
「パート4」は讃美歌的で、栄光の雲をたなびかせ、「パート5」はエーテルからの純粋なバラード。「パート6」は叙情的な衝動を屈折させてより抽象的にし、「パート7」はジャレットのヨーロピアン・カルテットのために書き直されたような優しい曲だ。「パート8」はブルースで基本に立ち返り、「パート9」はゴスペルとカントリーのヒントを含み、ジャレットの音楽的ヴィジョンがいかに包括的であったかを思い起こさせる。アンコールに選ばれた「虹の彼方に」は、『ラ・スカラ』、『ア・マルティテュード・オブ・エンジェルズ』、『ミュンヘン 2016』で聴かれた素晴らしいヴァージョンとは少し異なるフレージングで、ジャレットはまたもや類まれな演奏を締めくくっている。

Pianist and composer Keith Jarrett turned 80 on May 8, 2025. New Vienna, a live album recorded in 2016 during his last world tour, is the latest set from his archive. This marks the second time the musician has gone back to his archive to release a date from the storied city. 2000s much-lauded Vienna Concert too was a solo concert originally recorded in 1991. This concert was performed at the Musikverien (home of the Vienna State Opera) on July 9. New Vienna is composed of a widely varying, eponymous, nine-part improvisation, and an encore version of Yip Harburgs "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." "Part I" finds the pianist in amiable, even reckless form exploring blues, modal jazz, hard bop, and even classical music with seamless articulation and intricate, detailed harmonic vision. You can hear the pieces architecture emerge as he plays. "Part II" commences with ghostly minor-key chords in the instruments lower register, balanced with whispering mid-register chords and single notes as a frame that points the listener deeper into the mysterious progression. It eventually reveals itself to be an improvised homage to 20th century composers Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Anton Webern. While "Part III" is a post-bop fantasia, "Part IV" begins lyrically and sparely with ghostly, middle- and upper-register chord voicings surrounding a seemingly hymn-like melody that never quite emerges, then shifts toward gospel, folk, and Americana. The latter half of the work evolves right from the heart of its predecessor to embrace a formal lyricism that evokes emotions, memories, childhood, and wonder in Jarretts own inimitable way. The sixth part of this concert-length improvisation is seemingly a conversation where nothing gets resolved. Scalar inquiries, slightly dissonant chords in response, and interlocking left- and right-hand patterns all commingle, but deliberately dont quite come together. "Part VII" is self-reflective and emotionally searing simultaneously. There is great self-examination in the layering of Jarretts chords, pedaled reverb, and single-note lyricism that calls the past out from the ether and tenderly, carefully places it in harmony with the present. Part "VIII" weds gospel, blues, and ragtime in a wonderfully knotty explosion of assonant harmony and rhythm. New Viennas final section is a gospel-tinged song-like "dance" that expresses hope, optimism, and perseverance; it sums up the exploratory questions offered in the concerts first half in a stirring, jaunty, processional style. He begins "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from its bridge, tenderly letting the tune reveal itself when he goes into the verses, underscoring the central place of lyric harmony in an aesthetic he has pursued for more than half-a-century. New Vienna is special; Jarrett is deeply attuned to and in sync with seemingly infinite creativity, but here he is also plugged into his audience. While Jarretts solo recordings are voluminous and ranging, this stands with late-career masterpieces including 1997s La Scala, 2000s Vienna Concert, and 2016s A Multitude of Angels. ~ Thom Jurek
