バッハとヘンデルの伝統を受け継ぎ、フェリックス・メンデルスゾーンとその姉ファニー・ヘンゼルも、壮麗な合唱作品をのこしました。《聖パウロ》、《エリヤ》と並んでメンデルスゾーンの三大傑作オラトリオと言える《クリストゥス(キリスト)》は、1847年に作曲開始されましたが、姉ファニーの死とフェリックス自身の体力の衰弱により未完となった作品です。第1部「キリストの誕生」は、三博士の来訪の場面を中心に展開。第2部「キリストの受難」は十字架の場面が歌われます。ファニーの作品「賛歌」は、息子セバスティアンの1歳の誕生日のために書かれたもので、喜びに満ちた作品となっております。RIAS室内合唱団のアンサンブルはますます見事。独唱者も、2004年のバッハ・コンクールで優勝した、宗教作品からオペラまで世界中で活躍しているランツハマー、そしてオペラハウスで着実に実力をつけてきたオーストリアのテノール、ミッタールッツナーという、若手実力派を迎え、天才メンデルスゾーン姉弟の作品を、この上ない形で響かせています。

For various reasons, the music on this 2025 release by the Berlin RIAS Kammerchor and conductor Justin Doyle is not well known, and a competent recording like this one is to be welcomed. Casual listeners may be confused to read the track list and see a work called Christus, Op. 97, by Felix Mendelssohn; the truth is that he never wrote any such work, and some pieces that he composed based on the biblical Passion story were combined after his death into parts of a hypothetical oratorio. These choruses, connected by short recitatives, seem as though theyre missing an overarching structure, but Felixs cantata Wie der Hirsch schreit nach frischem Wasser, Op. 42, with colorful solo and ensemble settings of the poetic psalm 42 text elegantly executed by soprano Christina Landshamer and tenor Martin Mitterrutzner, is more effective. Best of all is the short cantata Lobgesang "Mein Seele ist stille" by Fanny Mendelssohn Henselt, which marries muscular Bachian counterpoint to Romantic warmth. Fanny remains better known for piano music and songs than for larger works, and this piece could be added to any choral or symphonic program. The classically smooth German choral sound of the RIAS Kammerchor is perfect for this music, beautifully recorded at the Kammermusiksaal at the Berlin Philharmonie. A worthwhile addition to the Mendelssohn discography. ~ James Manheim
