This opera by British painter and playwright Tom Phillips uses the avant-garde musical force of the challenging and influential ensemble AMM, with guests including Lol Coxhill on saxophone and vocalist Phil Minton stretching the limits of the human voice. High degrees of sound abstraction and noise are tied into a programmatic structure -- an unusual place to hear the typically dogmatic freeform music of the AMM group. The music flows in and out of focus and builds its scarce structure from Zen-like patience and willful abstraction.
