多彩な才能が交差する8人組バンド、キャロラインが最新アルバムをリリース!!

衝撃のセルフ・タイトルのデビュー・アルバムから早3年。キャロラインが、2ndアルバム『caroline 2』を、〈Rough Trade Records〉よりリリース。
バンドは、18ヶ月間、イギリスで様々な作曲セッションを重ね、主にラムズゲートのBig Jelly Studiosでレコーディングを行った。アルバムは、バンド・メンバーであるジャスパー・ルウェリン、キャスパー・ヒューズ、マイク・オマリーがプロデュースを手がけ、シド・ケンプがエンジニアリング、ジェイソン・エイグルがミキシング、ニューヨークのヘバ・カドリーがマスタリングを担当した。
本作は、鋭い音を奏でるギターで始まる。その後、遅れてゆっくりとした低音のギターが加わる。そして、ドラムの直接的ながらも騒々しいビート。3つの楽器はそれぞれ異なるリズムで演奏しているが、絡み合いながら、美しくアンバランスなループを形成している。ジャスパー・ルウェリンとマグダレーナ・マクリーンがその交錯の上をユニゾンで歌い、その下で渦巻く音が激しさを増していく。トロンボーン、バスクラリネット、ハルモニウムが、層をなして次々と音に溶け込んでいき、音は限界速度に達しようとしている。
そして、ヴァイオリンの鋭い高音がすべてを宇宙の彼方へと押し流そうとすると、電子ノイズの巨大な反響がすべてを真っ二つに切り裂く。その圧倒的な下降は数秒間続き、その後、ギターとドラムの攻撃的なサウンドが再び上昇し、2つのサウンドが空中で押し合い、引っ張り合い、最終的に重なり合う。2つの音世界が1つになって動き出す。『caroline 2』のオープニングは、その名も「Total euphoria(完全なる幸福感)」というタイトルがふさわしい。まさにその通りの曲だ。
それに合わせ、ビヨンセやトラヴィス・スコットに曲を提供した経験を持ち、フジロックフェスティバル '23でのパフォーマンスも記憶に新しいアーティスト、キャロライン・ポラチェックをフィーチャーしたアルバム収録曲「Tell me I never knew that」がミュージック・ビデオと共に公開されている。このビデオは、幼少期を日本で過ごした経験を持つキャロライン・ポラチェックとバンドが自ら撮影したものである。

An experimental octet from England, caroline is a slow-brewing project that was born from weekly improvisations by college students in practice rooms. They eventually moved to art spaces such as abandoned pools and barns for live shows, and recorded their eclectic mix of Midwestern emo, Appalachian folk, classical minimalism, and noise under contract to Rough Trade in the early 2020s. With membership that includes guitarists, string players, multiple percussionists, instrumentalist/vocalists, a woodwindist, and a brass specialist, their sophomore album, caroline 2, is at least as intoxicating as previous releases. Paradoxically exciting and narcotic at the same time, it runs the gamut from spare experimental folk to crushing noise. It begins with the aptly titled "Total euphoria," a song that opens with soft humming and a single repeated guitar chord before eventually adding a second chord, distant-sounding rock drums, and moody vocals singing variations of "If you let them/Ill let them," "If you let them/Ill let them in," and "Did we ever talk about/How you left them?" The albums first blown-out noise drop arrives just as one is fully mesmerized by "Total euphoria"s layers of repetition and expanding and contracting rhythms. That moment transforms what came before it into a louder, group-sung version with booming bass. Throughout, it maintains a rustic quality with its fiddle-style violin, live sound, and imperfect tuning, all characteristics of much of the rest of the album, which seems to emphasize different qualities of this four-and-a-half-minute overture while experimenting with recording technique as well as texture and structure. "Song two" begins with an audible inhale before exploring a more meandering emo-folk accented with dissonant shots of noise, chaotic stop-and-start percussion, and wavelike shifts in instrumental density. Its impressionistic lyrics refer to lightning, shouting, and fainting, as the phrase "Make up your mind" mutates into "Now I know your mind" by the end of the song. While that track may or may not be a hat tip to Blur, "Coldplay cover" is not actually a Coldplay cover, but rather an early shorthand description that stuck. In an attempt to represent dissonant thoughts, it consists of two songs -- one catchy, one languid -- playing at the same time in two different rooms, with the microphone moving between rooms. Eventually, each modifies the other. "When I get home" is a plaintive acoustic song with a slow, elastic tempo, the first half of which plays out over a distant, throbbing bass pulse, as if recorded several floors above a dance club. It later gathers its own additional noise, then ends with a ghostly Auto-Tuned duet. Even (relatively) straightforward tracks like the Alex G-esque "Tell me I never knew that" (featuring Caroline Polachek) take listeners on a sonic if not also emotional journey. The composite is affecting, engrossing, and a must for fans of acts spanning the aforementioned Alex G (whose God Save the Animals was a cited influence), Joan of Arc, and Flashpapr. ~ Marcy Donelson

トラッドやジャズ、スロウコアなどを溶解させた幽玄なサウンドで、UKフォークの深い森へと聴き手を運んだ初作から3年、ロンドンの即興集団8人組がセカンド・アルバムを完成させた。先行曲で迎えたキャロライン(!)・ポラチェックのハマりっぷりにも驚いたが、オレンジ・ミルク周辺の実験的な電子音楽が着想源としては大きかったようで、前作以上に音作りは前衛的かつ瞑想的。ふわふわと空気を漂っているかのようなメロディーと、アレックスG直系の加工されたヴォーカル、さまざまな距離感で鳴らされる音の数々が重なり、複雑で重層的な歌世界を耳の中に構築する。
