2023年と2024年の来日リサイタルなどで日本でも多くのファンを持つドイツのバリトン歌手、ベンヤミン・アップル。彼が尊敬するディートリッヒ・フィッシャー=ディースカウ(1925-2012)の生誕100年を記念し、その芸術家としての側面だけでなく、人間としての本質に迫ろうというアルバムが登場。かつてフィッシャー=ディースカウのマスタークラスに於いてヴォルフの解釈で高く評価され、彼自身の経験からか国際的キャリアのために名前は短くするようにというアドヴァイスを受けたというアップル。20世紀声楽界最大のアイコンの1人である彼に深い敬意を表し、彼が残した日記や手紙、様々な書類や演奏会の履歴、そして絵画などを数年に渡り研究してこのプロジェクトに臨み、その偉大な成功や世界的評価の背後に隠された個人的な人物像を描き出します。アルバムには世界初録音となるディートリヒの父アルベルトと兄クラウスの作品も収録しており、そのうち1曲はディートリヒの詩によるもの。140ページにも及ぶブックレットにはアップル自身がディートリヒの人生についての長文(英、独、仏語)を寄せているほか、その人生を物語る写真や資料、ディートリヒによる絵画など貴重な画像も掲載されています。「ディーター」は家族など身近な人々のディートリヒへの愛称。

More than 30 years after his retirement from singing, the recordings of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (or Dieter, as he was known to family and friends) remain standards. His legacy lives on in many ways, notably in the career of his last student, Benjamin Appl, who pays tribute to him on this album and adds some well-written recollections of Fischer-Dieskau as a teacher. Appl could have taken the easy route and recorded the works for which Fischer-Dieskau was best known, but after Schuberts An die Musik, D. 547, that aspect of the programming is pretty much done with, and large parts of Fischer-Dieskaus repertory, including Schumann and Richard Strauss, are sparsely represented (if at all). Instead, one hears a kind of biographical sequence, beginning with Fischer-Dieskaus childhood (both his father, Albert Fischer-Dieskau, and his brother, Klaus Fischer-Dieskau, were composers) and running through his wartime experiences and time as an American prisoner of war, through his marriages and up to his retirement. Thus, one gets a German musical theater number called Vater braucht ein Frau, along with works Fischer-Dieskau commissioned, including the Three Songs, Op. 45, of Samuel Barber. Fischer-Dieskaus own output in English was of varying quality, but Appl does well with these. The program might sound like a tall order, but combined with the booklet (the physical album is recommended here), which includes Fischer-Dieskaus own paintings, it makes sense, and Appl strikes the right balance in his sound. He is not a Fischer-Dieskau clone, but the resemblances are evoked here in a pleasing way. This is an essential release for Fischer-Dieskau fans but may also be recommended to those of Appl and of lieder in general. ~ James Manheim
