2022年のヴァン・クライバーン国際ピアノ・コンクールで、韓国のイム・ユンチャンがファイナルで演奏したラフマニノフのピアノ協奏曲第3番のライヴ録音が、デッカ・クラシックスより発売されます。イム・ユンチャンは18歳の史上最年少で優勝を果たし、この演奏で世界的な名声を博しました。マリン・オールソップが指揮するフォートワース交響楽団と共演しています。

Competition performances are all too often dominated by play-it-safe thinking, by a set of formulas dictated by a teachers rules for winning competitions, and little else. However, the Van Cliburn International Competition in Texas is supposed to be different, and sometimes it is. The most important such event in the U.S., the competition has launched star careers for its winners, and that has been the case for the 2022 victor, Yunchan Lim. Since a performance of the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30, with the New York Philharmonic in 2023, he has gone on to become a major phenomenon in the middle of the decade. Listeners wondering where he came from put this album on classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2025, and indeed, with the same Rachmaninov concerto, they are going to get a pretty good idea. The live recording from 2022 catches what must have been the excitement of being there. The peanut gallery may contribute complaints about small details of the orchestral work from the Fort Worth Symphony and conductor Marin Alsop, but the truth is that, especially in the finale, Alsop gets totally into the irresistible spirit, and the whole thing, given the busy schedule of concertos in a multi-player competition, shows remarkable control. Lim has the chops to take the outer movements quickly and spin long, energy-filled lines out of the basic melodic material. Perhaps the greatest masterwork is the central slow movement, where Lim relaxes from his exertions and enters a transcendent realm where few Rachmaninov players get. A marvelous recording with electric tension levels and, in all likelihood, something of a landmark. ~ James Manheim
