2025年(8月9日)に没後50周年を迎えるドミトリー・ショスタコーヴィチ。この偉大なロシアの作曲家の記念年を祝うアルバムが、ドイツ・グラモフォンより発売されます。世界初録音となるものを含む稀少な作品が収められ、そのほとんどが世界で唯一毎年行われているショスタコーヴィチの音楽祭、ドイツ・ザクセン州のゴーリッシュで開催される「国際ショスタコーヴィチ・フェスティバル」で録音されています。ショスタコーヴィチのほとんど知られていない音楽が約80分間、有名なアーティストにより演奏されているという、ショスタコーヴィチ・ファン必聴の一枚です。

A few of these works have been recorded before, notably the satirical opening song Anti-Formalist Rayok, which pokes dark fun at the composers persecutors during the repressive Stalin regime after World War II. Even that one was kept locked up by Shostakovich, and much of the rest is receiving world premieres and lives up to the Shostakovich Discoveries title. The album may be of most interest to Shostakovich buffs, but one is struck by how reflective of the composer many of these obscurities are. There are several early works that receive sharp, satirical performances by Daniil Trifonov, some of them from his living room during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are pieces completed by others, including a Prelude and Fugue in C sharp minor originally destined for the set of 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87. Probably the biggest discovery, which surfaced only shortly before this album was assembled, is a song, Yelabuga Nail, that was completed by Alexander Raskatov but is largely the work of Shostakovich. Dating from around 1971, it sets a poem by Yevgeny Yevtushenko about the suicide of Marina Tsvetayeva, harassed to death by the Stalin government. It is a prime example of the dark late Shostakovich and certainly merits further performances. The music is a mixed bag, certainly, but all of it will hold the interest of even casual Shostakovich fans. ~ James Manheim
