Considered by some fans to be Braxton's finest work, SEVEN COMPOSITIONS (TRIO) 1989 is indeed an apotheosis of Braxton's small group work; it's not surprising that he spent most of the next decade working with larger ensembles. Backed with bassist Adelhard Roidinger and drummer Tony Oxley, Braxton reels off some torrid solos on a bewildering variety of reed and woodwind instruments, including clarinet, flute and alto, c-melody, soprano and sopranino saxophones. Sounding at times like Rahsaan Roland Kirk's brainier younger brother, Braxton combines jazz and European modernism--he claims Stockhausen as his primary influence--like no one else. This is a simply staggering avant-jazz recording.
