Includes liner notes by James Gavin. 1999 was the millennium celebration of Hoagy Carmichael's birth and this album, although not issued until 2001, is another tribute to commemorate that occasion. The album derived from a show with the same title that cabaret artist Phillip Officer had critical success with in New York City. He is joined by a trio of Chicago musicians for a mix of famous Carmichael compositions and those that haven't been recorded that often. Although the singer comes from cabaret, the presence of veteran jazz violinist Johnny Frigo - - whose contributions to this session cannot be exaggerated - - guarantees that there is going to be more than just a smidgeon of jazz. This is amply demonstrated on a rousing "Lazy River" where Frigo takes over from Officer as he and the other two members of the trio give this tune a real Chicago jazz style workout. Officer brings to bear his cabaret background for a very dramatic, heart wrenching rendition of "Baltimore Oriole" getting major support from Joe Vito, who steps away from the piano to pick up the accordion as he and Officer celebrate this 1942 composition. The singer's enthusiasm for Carmichael's music permeates the entire set. Tunes as "Two Sleepy People," "Skylark" and the less familiar "When Love Goes Wrong" all get a dedicated offering from the light crooning Officer as he makes sure the meaning and message of the lyrics from each song are delivered with the appropriate feeling. No emotional waste here. This album achieves at least two objectives. First and foremost, celebrating the significant contributions to American popular song made by Hoagy Carmichael and his various collaborators. And second, how delightful they can be when skillfully caressed by a top notch cabaret performer. ~ Dave Nathan
