Although the material is quite familiar, there are several attractive features to this 2025 release of Hymns from Magdalen, featuring the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford. One is simply that the collection of favorite hymns, though common enough in general, is less often represented in England than in the U.S. English collegiate choirs tend to favor more involved polyphonic compositions to show their stuff. Another is the interesting note from Choir of Magdalen College director Mark Williams, pointing out that the body of "well-known hymns" has changed little in 30 or 40 years and that there are no works from the 21st century and few from the 20th. "[Hymn singing] is not a dying art as such (maintained as much in rugby stands as in churches), but the core repertoire is shrinking, rather than growing," he writes. A third feature -- of special interest to U.S. listeners -- is the selection; these hymns will mostly be known to those who have sung a lot of hymns in church, and some, like How Great Thou Art (a.k.a. My lord, my God) are second nature in both places. However, the likes of Stainer and Sullivan may be less common across the pond. Finally, publicity for this album has stressed the presence of Magdalen Colleges new organ, made by the Hermann Eule Orgelbau in Bautzen, Germany, and this stress is entirely justified by the instruments sharp and bright sound, bringing out internal lines of hymns. An instrumental piece from this organ might have broken up the long sequence of foursquare hymns a bit, but the singing is lively and energetic; the sound from Magdalen College Chapel itself is ideal. In the end, this is an album of interest to any choir director, chorister, or enthusiastic church hymn singer. ~ James Manheim
