【キアロスクーロ四重奏団のハイドンの旅、更に前進】
アリーナ・イブラギモヴァ率いるキアロスクーロ四重奏団。2005年に結成され、2016年4月には初来日公演も大成功を収めました。以降、しなやかな音色とダイナミックな演奏が多くの聴き手から高く評価されています。
2023年4月にリリースされた、ハイドンの弦楽四重奏曲《作品33》より最初の3曲(BISSA2588)は、「作品の本質に迫る、驚くほど忠実な演奏」(Diapason誌)と称賛され、多くの賞を受賞しました。そして今回のアルバムでは、このセットの残り3曲が収録されています。
1781年に作曲された《作品33》は、「ロシア四重奏曲」とも呼ばれ、ロシアの大公パーヴェル(のちの皇帝パーヴェル1世)に献呈されました。それまでのハイドンの作品に比べて大きなスタイルの変化があり、当時の聴衆の好みに合わせて、より軽やかで親しみやすい音楽が目指され、リズムにも生き生きとした魅力が感じられます。この曲集は、「古典派の弦楽四重奏曲」の始まりを示す重要な作品とされており、モーツァルトが大きな影響を受けて《ハイドン四重奏曲》を生み出したことでも知られています。
キアロスクーロ四重奏団は、ハイドンの弦楽四重奏曲を歴史的な奏法に基づく深い理解とともにたどるプロジェクトを2020年以来続けており、すでに《作品20》と《作品76》が発売済みです。

The Chiaroscuro Quartet has ventured into Mozart and Beethoven, but the group is continuing to survey the string quartets of Haydn, and it might be that he that suits the quartets style best. The groups performances aim toward historical authenticity; the players use period bows, gut strings, and a tough sound with only small amounts of vibrato. The hard-edged textures of the Chiaroscuro Quartet emphasize the contrasts in the music, which may be startling, but then Haydn was often about startling his audiences. Sample the Scherzo of the String Quartet in G major, Op. 33, No. 5, with its rhythms getting displaced quite unexpectedly. The quartet is capable of long cantabile lines, and vibrato does make an impact when it appears. All of this adds up to performances that bring out Haydns humor in a somewhat anarchic way; there are more graceful performances, but this one grabs the attention much as the works might have in their original performances, and one of those whose attention was grabbed was Mozart. The Menuhin School sound tones the quartet down with a bit of warmth, and this works. This may be a Haydn quartet recording that one can own and profitably compare with others; in any case, it should be heard.
