テネブレの最新アルバム!

キングズ・シンガーズの元メンバーであるナイジェル・ショートによって2001年に設立され、世界最高峰のヴォーカル・アンサンブルのひとつとして広く活動する"テネブレ"。2016年に「ブラームス&ブルックナー(SIGCD430)」が2度目のBBCミュージック・マガジン賞を受賞し、2018年には「天体の音楽(SIGCD904)」がグラミー賞にノミネートされるなど度々大きな注目を浴びてきた彼らが、代表的な合唱作品と現代もっとも注目されている作曲家の作品を録音しました。

「休息」をテーマにしたこのアルバムではまずジョエル・トンプソンの新作に注目です。15部構成で書かれた《A Prayer for Deliverance》は情熱と精密さを持った作品です。後半はハーバート・ハウエルズの《レクイエム》がメインとなっています。この作品はイギリスの合唱レパートリーで最も感動的な作品のひとつで、ハウエルズの息子の死がきっかけとなっている作品です。

A Prayer for Deliverance offers a set of short pieces and one longer work, Herbert Howells Requiem. They are centered on the title work by African American composer Joel Thompson, marking the casualties of the COVID-19 epidemic and of police abuses of African Americans in the early 2020s. "All of them," in the words of Tenebrae director Nigel Short, "explore similar themes of deliverance, forgiveness, comfort, and solace in times of particular stress and sorrow." The Thompson work is not well-known and lives up to the strong praise Short gives it in the notes, and in general, the program is cohesive and emotionally persuasive. There are lots of themed programs of religious music, but this one stands out for its commitment and beauty. Howells Requiem is something of a freeform group of pieces, with two settings of the Requiem aeternam text, with nothing else from the Catholic requiem mass, and it is a highly expressive work. The rest of the music is in English and contains familiar pieces (like Arthur Sullivans The Long Day Closes) and those less so. All the music hangs together, and John Taveners Song for Athene stands out in this context, which is different from his usual minimalist surroundings. Tenebrae is a small choir that produces consistently beautiful sounds, but the group outdoes itself here on an album that continues to be suited for troubled times.
