97～99年、今なおテクノ名盤として名高い「BASICTONALVOCABULARY」「BALANCE」「FORCE+FORM」を立て続けにリリースした名門TRESORから2作連続の完膚なきまでのテクノ・アルバムリリース。繰り返されるループの一方で、ディレイやエフェクトが枝分かれし、鋭利で独自の渦を形成していく9トラック。30年のキャリアと未知なるものへの好奇心を融合させた、Surgeonの現在地と過去を繋ぐ強力なテクノ・アルバム!

Following the back-to-basics release Crash Recoil, Surgeons first album for Tresor since the 90s, the techno stalwart made Shell~Wave, another excellent studio recording that captures the spontaneous energy of his live performances. All of the tracks were recorded in a single take, and while they were made on a similarly stripped-down set of equipment, Shell~Wave is distinguished by the addition of a delay unit. This makes Surgeons music sound more dub-influenced than ever, yet its still within the realm of Birmingham-style hard techno rather than the more detached ambient dub template set by Basic Channel. "Soul Fire" absolutely slams and scorches, while "Divine Shadow" moves along more fractured patterns. The eye of the storm is "Dying," a Coil-influenced soundscape with a shredded vocal loop. "Infinite Eye" has another complex, sneaky rhythm, then "Triple Threat" is a paranoid, panic-stricken storm with booming kick drums. "Fall" has a bit more of a rainy atmosphere than the other tracks, but still charges forward relentlessly. ~ Paul Simpson
