ネオソウルの新たな衝撃
Silas Short(サイラス・ショート)がStones Throwからのデビューアルバム"LUSHLAND"をリリース!

ソウルミュージックの聖地シカゴ近郊の街ミルウォーキーの音楽家系に生まれ育ち、幼少期から父や兄弟とともに地元のゴスペル・バンドに参加、歌や楽器のスキルを磨いてきた生粋のミュージシャン/シンガーソングライター: Silas Short。2021年デビューEP『Drawing』をリリース以降、Silasは新たな可能性を求めてシカゴからロサンゼルスに拠点を移し、今作の制作を開始した。

デビューアルバムLUSHLANDには、'80年代・'90年代のR&Bを基盤としたソウルフルな楽曲が詰め込まれている。幼少期からのゴスペルバンドでの経験、そしてヒップホップ、ファンク、ネオソウルに影響を受けた彼の音楽的ルーツが色濃く反映されている。D'AngeloやErykah Baduなどの王道ネオソウルも彷彿させる今作には、The RootsやSoulquarians(Erykah Badu、D'Angelo、Ms. Lauryn Hill)の一員であるレジェンドJames Poyserをはじめ、Ryan James Carr(Usher、Cordae)、Luke Titus(Kiefer)、Peanut Butter Wolfら豪華なアーティストたちが参加している。また、Karriem RigginsによるRemix曲も4月にリリースされる。

映画『A Real Pain』(BAFTA賞&ゴールデングローブ賞受賞、アカデミー賞ノミネート)に起用された楽曲「My Conversation」のカバー曲でも現在注目を集めている。

Silas Shorts world premiere on Stones Throw occurred in 2021 with Drawing, an EP of dulcet R&B ballads merging a guitar-led soul-jazz combo aesthetic with mellow hip-hop. That year, the musician experienced a loss that influenced his decision to relocate from Chicago to Los Angeles. He reappeared in 2024 with a couple previews of Lushland, as well as a faithful cover of the Uniques rocksteady nugget "My Conversation," featured in the widely acclaimed film A Real Pain. While this 2025 LP is the result of his move to the West Coast, the Midwest city that raised Short is not forsaken here. One of his key collaborators remains fellow producer and guitarist Jackson Shepard, and the partnership no doubt fostered the sense of continuity from the EP. In fact, one of the Shepard productions is "L-Train," where Short delivers a slick-rhyming dispatch from Chicagos rapid transit system. The likes of Ryan James Carr, Julius Rodriguez, Luke Titus, Daniel Salka, and YungMorpheus, L.A.-dwelling contributors with strong identities, likewise help make Lushland a smooth progression from Drawing. Theres a little more rhythmic oomph, and Short, whose lilting and tender singing voice is somewhere between Michael Franks and Taylor McFerrin, is more direct and assured. Few would think to write a hook as simple as "I like you, girl/Do you like me?" and be able to deliver it with such charm and conviction. In addition to "ILikeU" (which features the Roots James Poyser on keyboards), several other highlights are effective demonstrations of Shorts love for R&B ranging from the weepy ballads of the early 70s to the funkier hip-hop soul and neo-soul of the 90s. Among these soft focus yet emotionally resonant gems are the reassuring and dreamlike title track, the dazed "Guy," and the sanguine "Affirmation," a subtle dazzler with faint echoes of Bobby Caldwells "My Flame." Ending the album in poetic style is "Wolfs Blessing," a boom-bap instrumental with Stones Throw boss Peanut Butter Wolf scratching his and Charizmas "My World Premiere" -- the labels first release, from 1996, straight from the heart of an era that clearly inspired Short. ~ Andy Kellman

ストーンズ・スロウが送り出した新鋭の初フル・アルバム。音像はネオ・ソウルを軸とするが、ベッドルーム・ポップのようなローファイでドリーミーなヴァイブもふんだんに含んだ様子がモダンで今風だ。ナヨっとした脱力ヴォーカルもそのサウンドに似合うもので、シャーデー風味な"Guy"や、低温なラップをかます"L-Train"のような楽曲も上々の出来。
