A nice blend of Jennifer Lopez-style dance-pop and R&B-inspired ballads comprise The Art of a Woman, the promising first effort by Athena Cage. While there is nothing groundbreaking here, Cage's music has real radio appeal for Top 40, R&B, and rhythmic stations; she should fit right into these formats. Listeners will be super quick to draw "J.Lo" and Destiny's Child comparisons after hearing "All I Need Is Me" and "Hey Hey," both girlfriend-pride, talk-to-the-hand fare. The singer offers up a heartfelt performance on the ballad "Until You Come Back to Me," which is further prettied up by wistful synth-string parts. "Take It Out on Me" is a warm R&B-flavored ballad about the regret of a lost love. Thick drum beats, warm synth washes, and a performance filled with hope by Cage hit a home run. Nice work. The radio hit of the album, however, is "He Changed His Mind," a mid-tempo R&B cut that takes on a refreshing perspective: Cage sings advice to a best friend, whose man is treating her wrong. It's a nice tribute to friendship, particularly during romantic hardships. One pretty sizable faux pas, unfortunately, arrives on the timpani intro of "All or Nothing," which is too close to J.Lo's "Love Don't Cost a Thing" for comfort. Cage's forte lies in delivering rich ballads and bouncy R&B. When she ventures into the dance-pop arena, she becomes lost in the mire of J.Lo-ism. This singer needs to free herself from this J.Lo cage and find her own niche. Only then will she have the star potential of those she so closely, sometimes too closely, resembles. ~ Liana Jonas
