Considering their obvious love of raunchy garage punk and junk-shop psychedelia, its clear Frankie & the Witch Fingers are heavily invested in the sounds of rock & rolls noble past, and theyve added some new wrinkles to their formula on 2025s Trash Classic. With the addition of Jon Modaff to the lineup on keyboards and various electronic gadgets, the band have leapt headfirst into classic new wave and synth-punk sounds, and at its best, Trash Classic sounds like the love child of a wild assignation between Devo, the Screamers, and the early Cars after being fed an impressive amount of speed. While the crunch of Dylan Sizemore and Josh Menashes guitars still plays a big role in these songs, and Sizemores frantic, gulping vocals are the perfect match for the material, Modaff has been given plenty of room to run wild on Trash Classic, and the buzzy madness of his gizmos has given this band a wildly energetic kick in the pants. Bassist Nicole "Nikki Pickle" Smith and drummer Nick Aguilar helped add credibility to the bands hard rock influences on 2023s Data Doom, but they play leaner and meaner here, pushing the energy into the red zone; on numbers like "Total Reset" and "Fucksake," the performances threaten to explode like a bag of Roman candles, and its a whole lot of fun to hear. Lyrically, these songs could have been written for some dystopian sci-fi flick in which the world fends off an invasion of aliens with skinny ties and cheap keyboards, adding another level of joyous chaos to this prize package. For sheer force of impact and fearless embrace of passionate eccentricity, Trash Classic not only lives up to its title, its Frankie & the Witch Fingers most purely pleasurable release to date. ~ Mark Deming
