The name of Bachs English Suites, BWV 806-811, comes from a note, "pour les Angloises," that one of his sons jotted on the manuscript. This could mean almost anything and doesnt necessarily mean there is anything English about them, which there isnt. Just as much as the keyboard works called French Suites, these pieces are French, with movements derived from the French court dances of the Baroque era. What one will think of the reading by Francesco Tristano (not Italian but Luxembourgish) depends on how dancelike one thinks French Baroque dance pieces should be. In Tristanos hands, theyre not very dancelike at all; Tristano is a bit flexible with the tempo, adding forward impulse to the faster movements and slowing down a bit to bring out the heavy French ornamentation Bach adds (he seems to play Bachs precisely, but does not add his own). The most notable feature of his reading is that it is pianistic without having much, if any, recourse to the pedal. Instead, his expression comes through articulation, principally legato. There is a certain stateliness that is lost in the Sarabandes, but Tristanos gigues are lively and crackling. Lovers of the likes of Masaaki Suzuki arent going to be impressed by this, but for others, it is likely to be a matter of taste in which the choices offered by streaming media may well play a big part. This is one of an ongoing series of Bach releases from Tristano, so if it connects, by all means, seek out his other albums. ~ James Manheim
