1980年代初頭、ドイツ・ハンブルクを拠点とするXマル・ドイッチラントが英国内に与えた衝撃は、40年経った今になって改めて伝えるのは容易な事ではない。独自のスタイルが貫かれた熱狂的な1stの『Fetisch』、その翌年に発表された壮大なスケール感で展開される2ndの『Tocsin』をはじめ、関連EPの楽曲も含めて力強く洗練された形でまとめ上げられた本作『Gift』は、未知なる地でチャンスを与えられた彼女たちが、それを恐れずに突き進み、唯一無二のアイデンティティを築き上げた瞬間をありありと捉えており、Xマルの原点を再び解き放つ作品に仕上がっている。
コクトー・ツインズのサポートアクトとして圧倒的な存在感を放ち、名門〈4AD〉との契約後、1983年にリリースしたデビュー・アルバム『Fetisch』は、ディス・モータル・コイルのメンバーにして〈4AD〉の創設者でもあるアイヴォ・ワッツ=ラッセルが「信じられないほど生々しい」と評したXマルのデモテープをもとに共同プロデュース。スージー・アンド・ザ・バンシーズ、バウハウス、バースデー・パーティー、ジョイ・ディヴィジョンといった、同時代のバンド達と同様に〈4AD〉の耽美で冷ややかな音像とカリスマ性を備えていた。1984年の2ndアルバム『Tocsin』はヴァン・モリソンやフランク・ザッパなど、数多くの仕事で知られるミック・グロソップがプロデュースを手掛け、神秘性を備えた表現技法で、芸術性と攻撃性を完璧に融合させて新たな地点を見出した。奥深さを損なう事なく、前作からより親しみやすくなった2ndアルバムは、まるで天空を翔けるペガサスのように全体が躍動し、圧倒的な存在感を放っている。ファンの間では『Fetisch』と『Tocsin』のどちらが最高傑作か、永遠に議論され続けるであろう。
まるで現実を離れ、当時にワープしたかのように過去の感覚を呼び覚ます本作は、新たなリスナーを魅了し、往年のファンを満足させる充実した内容。そして、ドイツ語で「Gift(ギフト)」が「毒」を意味するように、彼女らの音楽が単に甘美なものだけではないことを示唆しつつ、40年の時を経てもなお色褪せる事のない、Xマル・ドイッチラントの魔法が現代に蘇る。
2枚組CDにはブックレットが付属し、1枚目に1stアルバム『Fetisch』と EP『Qual』の3曲が収録され、2枚目には2ndアルバム『Tocsin』とシングル『Incubus Succubus II』の2曲を収録。
限定盤LPでは、『Fetisch』、『Tocsin』、『Qual』と『Incubus Succubus II』がそれぞれ収められた3枚組トランスペアレント・レッド・ヴァイナルに加え、豪華24ページ・ブックレットが付属している。

A year after the Sacred Bones label compiled Xmal Deutschlands pre-4AD recordings as Early Singles 1981-1982, 4AD took the baton and, with great care, assembled this triple-vinyl/double-CD set, gathering remasters of the 1983-1984 recordings by the alluring German band. Although it was a rehearsal tape that compelled 4AD co-founder Ivo Watts-Russell to fly to Hamburg and sign them, Xmal were somewhat known in the U.K. by then with the support of BBC DJ John Peel. Five months after Xmal recorded their first session for Peels show, they made their full-length 4AD debut with Fetisch, a confident and imposing set of danceable post-punk stitching together jagged guitars, pummeling rhythms, and vocals that seem to scold, warn, and threaten. Anja Huwes German lyrics didnt prevent a connection with English listeners, as the album almost topped the U.K. independent chart during a long stay of eight months. Driving lead single "Qual," promoted with an extended Watts-Russell dance remix augmented by a Linn drum machine, cracked the Top Ten of the independent singles chart. (Towering B-side "Sehnsucht" is not to be missed.) The swift non-album follow-up "Incubus Succubus II," a less stark version of the bands second single, reached number five. Tocsin, their second album, was produced by Mick Glossop (Magazines Real Life, Ruts The Crack, etc.) instead of Watts-Russell and the band. It sported a clearer and sharper sound with an increased prioritization of traditional song structures. Combined with a rising profile, the LP went to number one on the indie chart and crossed into the main album chart. Nothing from Tocsin was issued as a single, but the likes of "Mondlicht," "Reigen," and "Augen-blick" are among Xmals most bewitching and resonant songs. Unenthused by the direction Xmal had taken, Watts-Russell and 4AD then left the frame, and the band continued with other labels, including their own, through the rest of the decade. Gift: The 4AD Years, both sonically and visually, is a vivid documentation of their most prolific phase. ~ Andy Kellman
