On that rarefied list of unheralded pop geniuses, Jeff Kelly's name lurks dangerously near to the top. Since the mid-'80s he's led his band the Green Pajamas down a pathway of obscure neo-psych-pop glory, crafting one brilliant song (and album) after another, perfect pop gems informed by '60s psychedelia but not chained to the style. Unsurprisingly, the prolific singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist's solo efforts are equally rewarding (there's even a stellar box set of it). On INDISCRETION, a song suite concerning Catholic guilt and repentance, Kelly rocks things up a bit more than on his other solo work--the guitars are a bit thicker, the drums a bit heavier--but his uncanny popcraft is as sharp as ever. The guitar hook on "Somebody's Daughter" is worthy of RUBBER SOUL, and the orchestral sweep of "Cruel Velvet Sea"'s opening riff would make the Move jealous. This kind of psychedelic trainspotting would be for naught if Kelly didn't have the lyrical and melodic vision to back it up. As ever, his elegantly spun melodically lines fall perfectly in place together and his lyrics successfully navigate a tightrope between elliptical imagery and heart-baring romanticism. Upon hearing INDISCRETION, all Kelly's admirers can do is hope that the pop artiste's creative imperative continues to overpower any disenchantment engendered by continued, unjustifiable obscurity.
