運命が許すなら～パーセルとその同時代の作曲家たちの音楽

ヘレン・チャールストンは、2018年にロンドン・ヘンデル・コンペティションで優勝し、レザール・フロリサンのアカデミー「声の庭」に参加(2021-22)、BBCラジオ3のニュー・ジェネレーション・アーティスト(2021-23)に選出されました。セカンド・アルバム「Battle Cry」がグラモフォン・アワード(ベスト・コンセプト・アルバム)とBBCミュージック・マガジン・ヴォーカル・アワードに輝くなど、今、注目の的となっている若きメゾ・ソプラノ歌手です。彼女がBISレーベルにおける初のソロ・アルバムに選んだのは、2021年のロンドンでの古楽祭でその音楽に魅了され、その後のリサイタル・プログラムに必ず作品を組み込むようになったという、彼女にとって特別な作曲家であるパーセル。「束の間の音楽」「音楽が愛の糧であるなあらば」などの有名曲から、取り上げられることの少ない曲まで、パーセルの歌の粋が集められたプログラムで、そこにイギリスにおける劇音楽作曲家の代表格であるジョン・エクルズと、パーセルの実の息子ダニエル・パーセルの歌、ヴァイオルの名手だったクリストファー・シンプソンのディヴィジョン、パーセルの師にして友人だったジョン・ブロウのチェンバロ独奏のためのグラウンドを挟み込むことで、アルバムとしての完成度が高められています。
ジョナサン・マンソン、ウィリアム・カーター、ジュリアン・パーキンスというイギリス古楽界の名手たちによる通奏低音の上で、美しいパーセルの音楽を、透明感と色彩感を併せ持つ落ち着いた声質で繊細に、そして華麗に歌い上げています。

There are no real booklet notes for this 2025 release by the mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, but there is a conversation between Charlston and soprano Emma Kirkby, and this is actually clever. Reading it over (the physical CD is recommended here), one will recall that Kirkby made several recordings of songs from Purcells theatrical output, and then, listening to the present recording, one will be pleasantly unprepared for how different Charlstons readings are. Charlston is gaining a great deal of attention, and this album landed on classical best-seller lists in the spring of 2025. Listeners are drawn by how she goes in a new direction with Purcell, almost avoiding beauty of tone in favor of the text and the story. Most of her program is made up of recitative and arioso numbers, with just a few quicker pieces and instrumental numbers from the Sounds Baroque Trio (who, it must be said, are ideally in tune with Charlstons rather deliberate approach) to break up a long sequence of dramatic statements. There is no "When I am laid in earth" here, nor any of the other big Purcell hits, although most of the material is well enough known. Listeners have the advantage these days of being able to sample and see if they like what is being done here, but Charlston is different enough to be worth checking out. The BIS label records her at the All Saints Church in East Finchley, London, which adds a funereal tone to the proceedings and doesnt match the theatrical nature of the music. ~ James Manheim
