The cliche that if someones life hadnt been a true story, no one would have believed it was not coined for Dennis Hopper, but it suits him as it does few others. As an actor, filmmaker, and reflection of his times, Hopper went from disaster to triumph to disaster again several times in his 74 years, and he possessed talent, audacity, vision, questionable judgment, and dumb luck in impressive quantities. Its no wonder his story fascinates people, and one of those people is Mike Scott of the Waterboys, who has made a concept album about Hoppers tumultuous life. 2025s Life, Death and Dennis Hopper is the work of a dedicated fan and a born storyteller, and he manages to sum up a remarkable amount of the details of the mans life in the space of an hour, while also possessing the eclectic musical vision to keep up with the shifting tides of Hoppers fortune. One of Mike Scotts trademarks has long been his eagerness to explore different musical directions, and Life, Death and Dennis Hopper is a sonic crazy quilt, beginning with the acoustic folkie vibes of "Kansas" (sung by Steve Earle) and the cool jazzy stride of "Hollywood 55" to the muscular folk-rock of "The Tourist," the waltz-time Americana of "Riding Down to Mardi Gras," the stark, emotional psychodrama of "Letter from an Unknown Girlfriend" (with vocals from Fiona Apple), and the unnerving dance pulse of the harrowing dramatic vignette "Freakout at the Mud Palace." (Bruce Springsteen also makes a guest appearance, lending some craggy authority to "Ten Years Gone.") Hoppers is a story that goes all over the place, and Scott has no fear of following that lead musically or lyrically, and this album is sometimes witty, sometimes puzzling, and sometimes disorienting. (To save you some time on IMDB, no, Hopper never made a biker flick with Ann-Margret and/or Nancy Sinatra, no matter what "Freaks on Wheels" wants you to believe.) Like Hoppers grand film maudit The Last Movie, Life, Death and Dennis Hopper doesnt quite manage a satisfying ending, but what it delivers along the way is impassioned, literate, and daring, and its more than worthy of repeated listening. ~ Mark Deming
