Mad!

カルト的人気を誇るロンとラッセル兄弟によるポップ・デュオ、スパークス。トランスグレッシヴからは初となるアルバム『マッド!』、リリース。

Sparks(Ron MaelとRussell Maelの兄弟)は、Transgressive Recordsからニュー・アルバム『MAD!』をリリースする。Ron Maelは、社会の慣習を最も鋭敏に観察する人物の一人だ。劇作家、漫画家、小説家、映画製作者、歴史家など様々な分野で、彼は、Moliere(モリエール)、Hogarth(ホガース)、Fitzgerald(フィッツジェラルド)、Altman(アルトマン)、Swift(スウィフト)のような存在である。Ronはたまたまポピュラー・ソングという媒体で仕事をしているだけなのだ。彼の兄弟であるRussell Maelは、Ronの観察を独特の魅力的な方法で表現する才能を持ち、フロントマンとして人を魅了し、並外れた音域のカウンターテナーの声にも恵まれている。「Two Hands, One Mouth」という彼らのツアー名の一つを思い起こさせるキーボードのRonとボーカルのRussellの錬金術こそ、まさに彼らがおこなっていることなのだ。そして、バンドの28枚目のスタジオ・アルバムである『MAD!』ほど、それが上手くおこなわれたことはほぼない。『MAD!』では、RonとRussellが、ブランド品のバックパック、タトゥー、遂行的な献身(神、恋人、セレブリティー、スポーツチームなど)、冗談の覇権、インフルエンサーの台頭などの文化的現象を検証している。風刺は決して直接的ではなく、常にリスナーが空白を埋めるのに十分な曖昧さを残している。また、非常に珍しい語彙(今年の他の多くのアルバムでは「認識論」という言葉は聞かれない)と文化的言及が、聴く毎に飛び込んでくる。音楽的には、ニュー・ウェイヴ、シンセポップ、アート・ロック、エレクトロニックオペラへのオマージュが込められている。これらはすべて、Sparksが開拓した、あるいは発明したジャンルだ。AirからShostakovichまで、他のアーティストが鳴らす音を聴くと、そもそも彼らはSparksが影響を与えた人たちだ、ということを思い出す(Shostakovichは別かもしれないが)。しかし、究極的には、『MAD!』はモダンなレコードであり、現代の世界に属し、現代の世界に語りかけるものだ。アルバムは「Do Things My Own Way」という曲で始まる。これは、アルバムのリード・シングルとなった、典型的な前向きなプログレッシヴ・ポップの曲だ。しかし、この曲は、Mael兄弟自身のマニフェストのようなものでもある。なぜなら、Sparksは、常に自分たちのやり方で物事を進めてきたバンドだからだ。

With A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip and The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte, Sparks delivered near-perfect distillations of everything that made them so beloved for so long. Ron and Russell Mael set the bar so high with those albums that in comparison, Mad! cant help but feel like a slight letdown. The Maels certainly create a Sparks-ish mood thats equal parts jaunty and apocalyptic, and express that mood in their time-tested styles, whether its the symphonic mayhem of "I-405 Rules," an ode to the auxiliary Interstate Highway that borders Los Angeles, or the new wave juggernaut "Do Things My Own Way," a portrait of someone so independent they wont take advice from -- or give advice to -- anyone. The intentionally absurd levels of pomp Mad!s songs build to are also pure Sparks, but the showy arrangements highlight the occasionally slight songwriting. The combination of broadly sketched satire and elaborate sonics works best on "JanSport Backpack," a tale of rejection and branding that attains a remarkable majesty for a song inspired by an athleisure accessory, and "Running Up a Tab at the Hotel for the Fab," a taut synth-rock grind where faking it til you make it could have dire consequences. Some of the albums other standouts happen when the Maels tongues arent quite as firmly in their cheeks. The bittersweet undercurrent of "In Daylight" makes for some of Mad!s finest couplets ("I cant approach you since daylight reveals me/So Ill just wait for the night conceal me"); "A Long Red Light" captures the creeping existential dread of feeling the moments of ones life tick away inexorably; and "Drowned in a Sea of Tears" brings some real pathos, as well as drama, to Mad!s proceedings. It may not be as consistent as some of their other albums, but theres still quite a bit of Sparks witty tale-spinning for fans to enjoy. ~ Heather Phares

カルト的人気を得ているポップ・デュオの28枚目となるアルバム。インフルエンサーの台頭など現代社会を風刺した歌詞には、その鋭い観察眼が漲っている。オペラやニューウェイヴといった多くの要素で彩られた曲群は非常に精巧。同じように聴こえるアレンジが一つもなく、すべての曲が一度聴いたら口ずさめるほどの親しみやすいメロディーを湛えている。
