霧状に輝きを放つ、北欧アヴァン・ポップの至宝ジェニー・ヴァルが待望の最新アルバムを〈4AD〉よりリリース!!

「フランスの知性・哲人」とも称されるセルジュ・ルタンスの香水から名前を冠した本作、『Iris Silver Mist』は、ジェニー・ヴァルの〈4AD〉移籍後、2つ目となる待望のアルバムである。幽玄さと生命力を併せ持つ透明度の高い彼女の歌声は、タイトル通り、霧状に輝きを放つ香水を想わせ、その優雅な香りは花と煙の間を漂いながら、リスナーを極上のアヴァンポップへと誘う。

先行シングル「To Be a Rose」は、ドラムマシンのパーカッシヴなビートをバックに、語るように歌が始まり、スモーキーなシンセとコーラスに絡み合いながら昇華されていく必聴トラック。同曲は、PitchforkにてBest New Trackにも選出され「ノルウェーのソングライターによる、鮮やかで柔らかな筆致で掘り下げる香りの記憶は、決して単純なものではない。」として、早くも絶賛されている。
また、「Heiner Muller」では、雨の中で犬と散歩しながら口ずさむ彼女の声が収められ、「Spirit Mist」にはオスロ・地下鉄のハム音が含まれているように、数々のフィールドレコーディングによって音楽と現実の境目が暈され、幻想的な彼女の世界が展開されている。

2024年に行われた "I want to be a Machine" と題されたミュージック・パフォーマンスでは、本作に収録された多くの新曲が、まだ録音される前の段階で披露されている。(舞台上には炊飯器が並べられ、楽曲は米の蒸気と香りに包まれていた。)新作アルバムをパフォーマンスから披露するという極めて異例のアプローチは、音楽における "身体的かつ即興的" な要素の重要性を強調し、その背景には本作の制作時期に関わる彼女の心の動きが現れていた。パンデミックによってライブ音楽が姿を消した当時、心にぽっかりと穴が空いていたジェニー・ヴァルは、戸惑いながらも、やがて香水に興味を持ちはじめ、のめり込んだ。香りを嗅ぎ、収集し、読んで、執筆して... 音楽を一旦脇に置き、他の事に没頭して身を沈めていた。音楽の空白を、香りで埋めようとしていた事を、時間をかけて自覚した彼女が再び音楽制作に立ち戻って完成させたのが、本作『Iris Silver Mist』なのである。

エンジニアは前作に続き、坂本龍一やビョークといった大物アーティストから、アレックスGやプーマ・ブルーといったインディ・アクトまで幅広く手がける才媛ヘバ・カドリーが担当。盟友ホーヴァル・ヴォルデンも参加している。

Jenny Hval is an artist so finely attuned to sensory experiences, its not surprising she rekindled her passion for fragrance during the COVID-19 global pandemic, a time when mere human contact -- to say nothing of live performance -- was difficult if not impossible. She brings these needs for sensuality, creativity, and connection together movingly on Iris Silver Mist, an album named after a Serge Lutens perfume shes described as smelling "like being close to ghosts." Frequently, Iris Silver Mist sounds like being close to ghosts. On "You Died," theres a spectral float to Hvals vocals and the electronics that surround them; on "Spirit Mist," starbursts of arpeggiated synths and field recordings of the Oslo subway sound like transit into another dimension; and on "I Want the End to Sound Like This," weightless ambient drones transcend the need for words altogether. Even if Iris Silver Mist aims to be as transparent as scent, its often more present and intimate than her previous albums. Like a master perfumer blending base, heart, and top notes, Hval heightens and transmutes memories and desires to beguiling effect on songs such as "Lay Down," a lush remembrance tinged with 60s symphonic pop and grounded by the purring of a cat. She makes the most of the ways music, and scent, can blur the lines between past and present: On "To Be a Rose," times with her mother and being on-stage are inextricably linked by cigarette smoke. The paths Iris Silver Mists songs take may wind and linger like trails of perfume, but even when "I Dont Know What Free Is" shifts from trippy jazz to exultant dance beats, she never loses her audience. Many of the albums pieces were originally written for her 2024 series of shows I Want to Be a Machine, and just how much sharing her music means to her is clear on "The Gift"s imagery of empty concert halls and "A Ballad," where she confesses that being on-stage is "the only page." Hvals reconnection with her senses, her art, and her people makes for some of her most personal and affecting music.
